(8> T h e Division sponsors a research project In adult education that has been engaged, under the auspices of the Unit 1 Stat Department of Justice, in the preparation of materials and the training of teachers for the education of the foreign born. (9) Many of the institutes and conferences whieh the Division conducts are concerned with w a r problems. T w o e x a m p l e ! will illustrate the variety of groups which are served. T h e L e a d e r s h i p I n s t i t u t e of t h e Illinois Congress of P a r e n t s a n d T e a c h e r s , to be held in J u n e , will consider t h e impact of t h e w a r on the public schools. In October the second a n n u a l conference for foremen in defense industries will be held. (10) In cooperation w i t h the University Library, the Division is projecting a series of reading lists on the u n d e r s t a n d i n g of America, its aims, the war, and the peace to follow. T h e s e lists are distributed to all the libraries in the State.

A G R I C U L T U R E AND H O M E EXTENSION

ECONOMICS

T h e acceleration of oil-producing crops and protective foods, including soybeans, dairy, poultry, and pork products, and vegetables, is being energetically p r o m o t e d and t h e activities of s u b j e c t - m a t t e r specialists are being coordinated to u r g e on farmers the use of specific proven practices. S u g g e s t i o n s for a d j u s t m e n t to labor difficulties and to s h o r t a g e of m a t e r i a l s are being offered. S h o r t a g e s of standard materials for s p r a y i n g and insect control, for example, require advice concerning suitable s u b s t i t u t e s . T h e Illinois Food-for-Victory P r o g r a m is actively e n c o u r a g i n g citizens of the State to plant home, country, and school g a r d e n s and to expand the usual farm gardens. By this m e a n s a considerable a m o u n t of commercially g r o w n crops can be released for t h e a r m e d forces, for city dwellers, and for people in allied countries. P r o g r a m s are also being developed to encourage better food h a b i t s and to keep rural people acquainted w i t h the most timely forms of economic information. Rural y o u t h a r e being educated for w a r emergency needs and with respect to t h e c o n t r i b u t i o n s to defense which they can make t h r o u g h their organized 4-H Clubs And older rural y o u t h p r o g r a m s .
