BOARD OF T R U S T E E S

[April 20

I concur and recommend that these changes become effective September 1, 1953-

On motion of Mr. Bissell, these changes were approved by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Bissell, Mr. Herrick, Mrs. Holt, Mr. Johnston, Mr. Livingston, Mrs. Watkins; no, none; absent, Mr. Grange, Mr. Hickman, Mr. Megran, Mr. Nickell, Mr. Stratton.

CONTRACTS FOR FIRE STATION IMPROVEMENTS AT URBANA-CHAMPA1GN (18) T h e Director of the Physical Plant and the Comptroller recommend award of the following contracts for improvements in the Fire Station at UrbanaChampaign: General w o r k — E. N. DeAtley, Champaign $23 235 00 The base bid is $24,520. T h e University will take two alternates which provide deductions of $425 for omission of asphalt tile floor surfacing and $860 for omission of painting of masonry surfaces; total deduction, $1,285. Plumbing and heating work — Reliable Plumbing and Heating Co., Champaign 10 880 00 The above awards are to the lowest bidders. Electrical w o r k — Potter Electric Co., Urbana 7 238 25 It is proposed that this phase of the work be done under the University's standing cost-plus contract with the Potter Electric Company for remodeling work. T h e Physical Plant Department reports that it is not feasible to prepare specifications and secure competitive bids on the electrical work and complete the project by the end of the current fiscal biennium when the funds available for it will lapse. Funds for this project are available in the state appropriation "For remodeling, modernization, and improvement of existing buildings at UrbanaChampaign, including water reclamation installations, plans and specifications and fixed equipment installed relating thereto," and have been released by the Governor. I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute the contracts with E. N. DeAtley and the Reliable Plumbing and Heating Company and the change in the contract with the Potter Electric Company for this remodeling work.

On motion of Mrs. Watkins, this recommendation was approved and the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board were authorized to execute the contract.

CONTRACT FOR REMOVAL OF SMOKE STACK FOUNDATION IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING LABORATORY (19) The Director of the Physical Plant and the Comptroller recommend award of a contract for $5,250 to E. N. DeAtley, Champaign, the lowest bidder, for the removal of the foundation of the smoke stack in the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory, formerly the Engine Room of the old power plant. The old plant had two smoke stacks, one in the old Boiler House and the other in the Engine Room. The two stacks, other than the foundations, were removed several years ago. The removal of the foundation in the old Boiler House, now the Engineering Research Laboratory, is not necessary at this time, but the foundation in the former Engine Room, now the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory, takes up much needed floor space and should be removed. Funds are available in an appropriation made by the Board of Trustees on January 21, 1953, for removal of the stack foundation and improvement of the vacated area. I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute this contract.
