OPEN SESSION

At this point the Board convened in open session to consider the following reports and recommendations from the President of the University.

APPOINTMENT TO BOARD OF EXAMINERS IN ACCOUNTANCY (7) The Committee on Accountancy recommends the appointment of Mr. George R. Catlett, C.P.A., a partner in the firm of Arthur Anderson and Company, 120 South LaSalle Street, Chicago, to the Board of Examiners in Accountancy for a period of three years beginning July 1, 1953, replacing Mr. C. R. Miller whose three-year term will expire June 30, 1953. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Herrick, this appointment was approved.

APPOINTMENTS TO THE FACULTY (8) The following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. 1. RHODES W. FAIRBRIDGE, Visiting Associate Professor of Geology, beginning September 1, 1953, at an annual salary of $6,000 ( D ) . 2. PAUL B. SZANTO, Clinical Assistant Professor of Pathology, College of Medicine, beginning April 1, 1953, without salary ( D Y ) . Appointments to the Nonacademic Staff The Director of Nonacademic Personnel reports the following appointments to supervisory positions of upper level responsibility. 3. DAVID W . BONHAM, Senior Accountant, beginning March 16, 1953, at an annual salary of $5,400. 4. GEORGE P . PORTER, Assistant Instrument and Efficiency Engineer, beginning March 2, 1953, at an annual salary of $4,500. 5. DAVID T. W I A N T , Placement Officer, Office of Nonacademic Personnel, Chicago Professional Colleges, beginning March 9, 1953, at an annual salary of

$3,420.

6. GORDON WILBERT, Senior Accountant, Chicago Professional Colleges, beginning March 2, 1953, at an annual salary of $4,560.

On motion of Mrs. Watkins, these appointments were confirmed.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR PROFESSOR ROBERT BIERSTEDT (9) Professor Robert Bierstedt of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, who was granted a sabbatical leave of absence for the academic year I 953-i954 on one-half pay, has requested that in lieu thereof he be given leave of absence for the year without pay so that he may accept a visiting assignment as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the City College of New York. The President has approved this request and accordingly Professor Bierstedt's name has been deleted from the list of sabbatical leaves approved by the Board of Trustees at its meeting on March 25, 1953-

GRADUATION W I T H HONORS IN AGRICULTURE (10) The Faculty of the College of Agriculture and the University Senate recommend the following plan for awarding graduation honors in agriculture, effective January 1, 1954: Honors awarded to superior students at graduation shall be designated, after the name and the degree on the diploma, as Honors and High Honors. For the degree with Honors, the students must have an average of 4 2 in all courses used for graduation; for the degree with High Honors, the student must have an average of 4.5 in all courses used for graduation. I concur.

On motion of Mrs. Watkins, this recommendation was approved.
