11. ROBERT P . VON VERDO, Assistant Business Manager, Engineering Research Laboratory (Control Systems Laboratory), beginning January I, 1953, at an annual salary of $7,200. 12. MARTHA C. WROE, Supervisor of Physical Therapy, Chicago Professional Colleges, beginning January 5, 1953, at an annual salary of $4,200. 13. BERNITA A. YOUNGS, Dietitian, Chicago Professional Colleges, beginning January 5, 1953, at an annual salary of $3,480.

On motion of Mr. Herrick, these appointments were confirmed.

APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRMAN OF DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE (3) Professor C. M. Kneier has asked to be relieved of his administrative duties as Chairman of the Department of Political Science so that he may devote full time to his teaching and research. H e has served as Chairman of the Department since September, 1948, and his present two-year term will expire August 31, 1953The members of the Department and the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences have reluctantly acceded to his request and I concur. The Executive Committee of the College and the Dean recommend the appointment of Professor Francis G. Wilson as Chairman of the Department of Political Science for the statutory term of two years from September I, 1953I concur and recommend that the standard adjustment be made in his salary for this administrative service when the budget for 1953-1954 is prepared.

On motion of Mr. Nickell, this appointment was approved.

APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRMAN OF T H E DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY (4) Professor John W . Albig, Chairman of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, has administered that department, first as Executive Secretary and later as Chairman, since IQ37. H i s present two-year term as Chairman will expire August 31, 1953. H e has asked that he not be reappointed so that he may devote full time to his work as Professor of Sociology and Professor in the Institute of Communications Research. I have approved his request. The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences recommends the appointment of Associate Professor James E. Hulett, Jr., as Chairman of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology for the statutory term of two years from September 1, 1953. This recommendation has been made after consultation with the members of the Department and the Executive Committee of the College. I concur and recommend further that the standard adjustment be made in his salary for this administrative service when the budget for I953-J954 is prepared.

On motion of Mr. Grange, this appointment was approved.

SABBATICAL LEAVES OF ABSENCE, 19 5 3 - 1 9 5 4 (5) I recommend that the following members of the staff be given sabbatical leaves of absence during the academic year I953-IQS4 in accordance with the provisions of the University of Illinois Statutes and on the terms and for the periods indicated. The programs of research, study, and travel for which these leaves are requested have been examined by the University Research Board which advises the President in such matters. The Research Board's report to the President includes an evaluation of the program in terms of benefits to the University and to the individual and constitutes a part of the record of each case.
