CHANGE IN ORGANIZATION O F T H E DEPARTMENT OF ART (34) The headship of the Department of A r t will become vacant on September I when Professor Allen S. Weller, the present Head of the Department, becomes Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts. The faculty of the Department has voted to recommend a change in departmental organization from a headship to a chairmanship for the academic year 1954-1955. This is permissive under the University Statutes if concurred in by the Dean of the College and the President of the University. The Dean and I concur. After consulting with the Executive Committee of the Department, the Dean recommends the appointment of Professor C. V. Donovan as Acting Chairman of the Department for one year from September 1, 1954, or until such a prior time as a permanent Head is appointed. I concur in this recommendation.

CONTRACT FOR RESIDENCE HALLS F U R N I T U R E (35) During World W a r II, the Gymnasium Annex was converted into a barracks for Navy trainees and the Ice Skating Rink as a barracks for Army trainees. For a few years following the war the Gymnasium Annex was operated as a low-cost dormitory for men. In view of the successful experience with this operation and the need for low-cost housing for men, a unit (Noble House) of the Men's Residence Halls was constructed to provide a dormitory-barracks type of accommodations with a capacity of 288 men. This unit was opened in the first semester of 1952-1953 with an average occupancy of 269. In the second semester, the occupancy dropped to 70. In the first semester of 1953-1954, the average
