COMMUNICATION FROM FORMER TRUSTEES RELATING TO THE PRESIDENCY OF THE UNIVERSITY

The Secretary presented the following communication received from fifteen former members of the Board of Trustees. Copies of this had previously been sent to all members of the Board.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS AUGUST 27, 1953

Board of Trustees University of Illinois Urbana, Illinois We, the undersigned citizens of this State, all of whom were formerly members of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois, wish to record our protest against the unprecedented action of the present Board of Trustees in forcing Dr. George D. Stoddard to resign as President of the University. Dr. Stoddard has long been considered one of the outstanding educators in the United States. Common decency required an orderly procedure and a fair hearing for him. Instead, those who initiated the midnight action against Dr. Stoddard, did not even inform him or their fellow-trustees that any such subject was to be brought up for consideration.
