CHAPTER VI. THE STUDENT BODY When the University was first opened for the reception of students, March 2, 1868, about fifty1 persons were enrolled. During the term the number increased to 77. The first full school year, beginning in the fall of 1868, showed a total of 128 students. For the next three years there was a large annual increase in the number of students enrolled, but for the two succeeding years the increase was very slight. A period of fifteen years followed in which the number of students remained practically stationary at about 400, although in 1883-4 as few as 330 were in attendance. In 1888-9 the number enrolled was once more over 400, and from that time there has been almost no year in which the number of students failed to exceed that of the preceding year. The following table2 gives the enrolment for each year since the organization of the University. It will be noted that women were first admitted in 1870-71, and that they have each year represented about one-fifth of the total number of students enrolled.
