BOARD OF TRUSTEES

[December 18

Resolved that the Board of Trustees accept the income thus available as transmitted to it by the Trustee, and to use it for the purpose specified, and be it further Resolved that the Comptroller of the University be designated as the officer authorized to receive and receipt for such income, and that it be the expressed desire of the Board that the income be made available to the University in quarterly installments, to be paid prior to or upon March 31, June 30, September 30, and December 31 of each year.

On motion of Mr. Livingston, this resolution was adopted. He called attention to the previous action taken by the Board with respect to this matter at its meeting on November 28, 1956, when representatives of the Fred S. Bailey estate reported to the Board on the nature of the trust created by Mr. Bailey's will as it affects the University.

GRANT FOR STUDY OF CORONARY HEART DISEASE (14) T h e Departments of Medicine and Preventive Medicine have submitted an application to the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare for a grant to study coronary heart disease. A group of employees of the Western Electric Company who are believed to be free of coronary heart disease will be studied over a period of five years. The original grant of $189,500 will be for one year, and annual renewals are anticipated. Particular emphasis will be given to the following factors which may have an effect on heart disease: body build, body fatness, diet, hypertension, blood lipids, physical activity, heredity (including geographic and national background), and emotional and psychological factors. The Dean of the College of Medicine, the Vice-President in charge of the Chicago Professional Colleges, and the Vice-President and Comptroller recommend that if the application is approved, the funds be accepted for this research work. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Swain, this recommendation was approved.

FEDERAL FUNDS FOR HEALTH RESEARCH FACILITIES (15) At its meeting on November 28, 1956, the Board of Trustees authorized an application for federal funds for permanent improvements for health research facilities at the Chicago Professional Colleges and appropriated the necessary matching University funds. T h e University has been informed that the Medical Advisory Committee on Health Research Facilities has approved grants of federal funds for all of these projects.
