Botany Greenhouse Replacement

1.

Present greenhouses are old, dilapidated, hazardous (leakage of fumigants) and improperly designed for modern research (narrow aisles and totally inadequate headhouse facilities). They are separated and uneconomical to operate. They also stand on land needed for other purposes.

2.

Botany has asked for replacement of these greenhouses as a single unit adjacent to the Agronomy-Horticulture greenhouses. We ask for replacement on a bench area basis, plus a headhouse with (1) adequate fumigating and sterilizing chambers, (2) soil preparation and potting rooms, and (3) a room for growth chambers permitting withdrawal of plants for periodic controlled experimentation. In addition, we ask that the Life Sciences Teaching Laboratory be planned for a 1500 ft? teaching greenhouse plus a 400 ft2 headhouse on the roof* This greenhouse would be used to grow materials for classes and for teaching plant physiology. If a teaching laboratory is not built, the greenhouse should go on the roof of the next building constructed in the Biology-Medical School complex.

3.

Funding for these greenhouses has been planned as part of the cost of the buildings that will replace or shade the present greenhouses. However, replacement of the Botany Annex greenhouses was eliminated from the budget of the Engineering Library. It appears that the greenhouses will have to be secured as a separate capital request. We have no firm assignment of land for the greenhouses and no plans on which to base a cost estimate. The first step is to secure these.
