solution of the problems raised by the decision of the Superior Court of Cook County in the case of Virginia Kenny. On motion of Dr. Meyer, the President was authorized to put into effect the plan presented, with such modifications as do not interfere with its substance. PAYMENT OF FEES FOR LEGAL SERVICES (7) The Board of Trustees has authorized the employment of Snyder, Chadwell, and Fagerburg, attorneys in Chicago, as special counsel for the University in two law suits: 1. The case of Miss Virginia A. Kenny, Medical Social Worker in the Social Service Department of the Research and Educational Hospitals, suing for a writ of mandamus directing the Board of Trustees to restore to her "all her rights, duties, honors, and emoluments as the person in charge of the Social Service Department of the Research and Educational Hospitals of the University of Illinois." 2. The case of Misses Ida E. Blackburn, Theresa G. Heggerty, and Harriet B. Allen, former teachers of children patients in the Research and Educational Hospitals, which positions have been discontinued, seeking a writ of mandamus ordering the restoration of those positions. The Legal Counsel submits two statements received from this law firm for services to date: For services in the Kenny case $ 7 242 21 For services in the Blackburn et al. case 3 112 80

The Legal Counsel recommends payment of these bills. A special appropriation will be required. I concur. On motion of Mr. Livingston, these payments were authorized as recommended. EMPLOYMENT O F SPECIAL COUNSEL IN PROCEEDINGS INVOLVING UNIVERSITY'S LIABILITY UNDER ELECTRICAL CONTRACT FOR CONSTRUCTION OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING BUILDING

(8) The University Counsel requests that the Board of Trustees authorize the employment of Craig and Craig, attorneys, Mattoon, Illinois, as special counsel for the University in proceedings instituted by the Leverenz Electric Company, Danville, Illinois, in the Circuit Court of Champaign County, and in such other proceedings as the University may determine are desirable, under a claim for additional payment of approximately $9,000 on a contract for electrical work in the construction of the Electrical Engineering Building. This dispute has gone through the arbitration procedure provided in the contract, but Legal Counsel for the University recommends against acceptance of the findings of the arbitrators. I concur. On motion of Mr. McLaughlin, this recommendation was adopted, subject to the approval of the President of the University.
