I recommend, therefore, that the Board of Trustees authorize the payment of compensation to Dr. Lloyd Smith in accordance with the formula followed in other compensation cases governed by the Occupational Diseases Act of Illinois, in an amount yet to be determined.

O n motion of M r . Herrick, this settlement w a s authorized as recommended.

AUTOMOBILE FOR THE VICE-PRESIDENT IN CHARGE OF CHICAGO PROFESSIONAL COLLEGES (6) On an informal canvass of the Executive Committee, I recommend that the Board authorize the purchase of an automobile to be assigned to the VicePresident of the University, in charge of the Chicago Professional Colleges, for his use and that an appropriation of $2,700, or as much thereof as may be necessary, be made for this purpose. Quotations have been secured from several dealers on an appropriate type of car for this purpose. T h e Business Manager of the Chicago Professional Colleges, the Director of Purchases, and the Comptroller recommend the purchase of a Buick four-door roadmaster sedan, model 49-71, from Emil Denemark, Inc., Chicago, the lowest bidder, at a price of $2,685.09. I concur.

AUTOMOBILE FOR THE PRESIDENT O F THE UNIVERSITY

President Williamson asked t h e Board to consider the purchase of an automobile for the President of the University to replace t h e University's Buick limousine which h a s been in service since February, 1940. M r . Williamson presented a report from the Physical Plant Department which indicates that the Buick can no longer be kept in a condition safe for highway driving a n d that it should be replaced. H e also presented quotations secured on several cars. On motion of M r . Hickman, the Board authorized the purchase of a DeSoto eight-passenger sedan from Lloyd Eichhorst, Inc., Champaign, at a list price of $3,031.44 with an allowance of $1,000 on t h e Buick limousine, making a net price of $2,031.44 delivered in Champaign; and an appropriation of $2,050, or so much thereof as m a y be necessary, was made from the General Reserve F u n d for this purpose, by the following vote: Aye, M r . Herrick, M r . Hickman, M r s . Holt, Mr. Livingston, M r . McLaughlin, D r . Meyer, M r . Nickell, M r . Williamson; no, none; absent, M r . Fornof, M r . Stevenson, Mrs. Watkins. OPEN SESSION

T h e Secretary reported that t h e President h a s approved the following new appointments to the faculty of t h e rank of Assistant Professor and above since the previous meeting of t h e Board of T r u s t e e s :

ary I, 1950, at an annual salary of $5,500. 2. RUBIN G. COHN, Associate Professor of Law, beginning September I, 1949, at an annual salary of $7,500.
