Company by the Board of Trustees on March 9, 1948 (Minutes, page 1046). The award of the contracts for the other phases of this project was deferred until funds were available. The Company agreed to allow their bid to stand until July 31, 1948. Funds are now available in the Physical Plant Department renewal and replacement budget for the remainder of the work, and the Director of that Department and the Comptroller recommend that an addition of $26,580 be made in the contract with M. J. Corboy Company in accordance with their lowest total bid on January 26, 1948, to provide for the fire pump and the installation of overhead fire mains. I concur and request that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute an addition to the contract with the M. J. Corboy Company for this work.

On motion of Mr. Livingston, this addition to contract was approved and authority was given as recommended.

CHANGES IN CIVIL SERVICE CLASSIFICATIONS

Mr. Livingston reported, for the Committee on Civil Service and Employees, a list of changes in and additions to the list of Civil Service Classifications, requested by the Director of Nonacademic Personnel (see Appendix, page 73). On motion of Mr. Livingston, these changes and additions were approved effective July 1, 1948. EXECUTIVE SESSION At this point the Board went into executive session.

A P P O I N T M E N T O F MR. D. W . SMYTHE

Mr. Nickell and Mr. Livingston raised a question as to the appointment by the President of the University of Mr. D. W. Smythe as Professor of Economics and Research Professor in the Institute of Communications Research. After discussion, and on motion of Mr. Livingston, this matter was referred to the President's Office for study and report to the Board.

STAFF HOUSING

The Provost reported that he had just been informed that the residence of the late Professor Alta Gwinn Saunders was available, at a price of $25,000, and requested authority to purchase this property in the event that the property on Lincoln Avenue should not be available at

$30,000.

On motion of Mr. Livingston, this purchase was referred to the Provost and the Executive Committee, with power to act, by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Fornof, Mrs. Holt, Mr. Livingston, Mr. McKelvey, Mr. McLaughlin, Mr. Nickell; no, none; absent, Mr. Davis, Mr. Green, Dr. Luken, Dr. Meyer, Mr. Williamson.
