DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY (4) The President reports for official record that he has authorized a change in the name of the Department of Sociology to the "Department of Sociology and Anthropology."

On motion of Mr. Nickell, this change was approved.

APPROVAL O F ACTIONS OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION (5) The Board of Directors of the Athletic Association submit the following actions for approval: 1. An appropriation of $19,250 to purchase the residence property at 301 West Pennsylvania Avenue, Urbana. 2. An appropriation of $1,874 and award of a contract to the Bash Roofing Company to recalk all expansion joints in the south horseshoe of Memorial Stadium. (The architects, Holabird and Root, recommended for this purpose the use of Hornex, and the Bash Roofing Company is the local distributor for this product.) 3. An additional appropriation of $3,000 for the construction of a well at the new golf course. (The Board of Trustees on May 22, 1948, Minutes, page 1102, approved an appropriation of $9,000 for this purpose. It is now clear that this amount will be inadequate, and the supplementary appropriation of $3,000 is recommended.) 4. An appropriation of $6,000 for improvements in wiring and new lights for the basketball courts in the West Great Hall of the Stadium. 5. An appropriation of $250 for the purchase of championship awards for members of the baseball team. 6. A special appropriation of $3,000 for a contribution to the Alumni Association in connection with service rendered by that organization in field work. 7. An appropriation of $500 for the annual contribution to the University of Illinois Band to apply on certain expenditures in connection with the football band program.

On motion of Mr. Livingston, these actions were approved.

LEGAL SERVICES FOR W O M E N ' S RESIDENCE HALL LOAN (6) The construction of the Women's Residence Hall, Urbana, is to be financed in part by borrowing funds in the amount of $900,000. In securing such funds it is necessary that there be an approving opinion of independent counsel. The Legal Counsel and the Comptroller recommend that the firm of Chapman and Cutler, attorneys of Chicago, be engaged for all necessary services in connection with this bond issue.

On motion of Mr. McKelvey, the employment of Chapman and Cutler was authorized as recommended.

SPECIAL APPROPRIATIONS FOR NONRECURRING EXPENDITURES (7) The Committee on Special Appropriations and Nonrecurring Expenditures recommends assignments from the General Reserve Fund for the following purposes: Special equipment for University Bands $ 8 500 Soil and W a t e r Conservation Laboratory for Agricultural Engineering Department 8 000 Equipment for Department of Art 4 235 Equipment for Workshop for Biological Sciences 3 000 Architectural services for remodeling in David Kinley Hall 2 400 Remodeling Room 137 Natural History Building for the Geology Department 980 Audiometer for the Department of Speech 750 Total $27 865
