success of the project, and funds already appropriated for it may be used for preparing plans. The Dean o£ the Graduate College recommends that the cost of plans for remodeling the building be paid out of the $150,000 already allocated to the computer project by the Board. I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute a contract for architectural services.

On motion of Mr. Nickell, this contract was authorized as recommended.

CLASSIFICATION OF " T E A C H E R OF HANDICAPPED C H I L D R E N " DISCONTINUED (7) The Legal Counsel recommends the adoption of the following resolution. Whereas, the teaching of children of common and high-school age who are patients in the Illinois Surgical Institute for Children, in the Research and Educational Hospitals of the University of Illinois, has been discontinued, and Whereas, it is the judgment of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois that it is for the good of the classified service to abolish the classification of "Teacher of Handicapped Children," Therefore, Be It Resolved by the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois under and by virtue of the powers conferred upon it by the statutes of Illinois in such case made and provided and in accordance with the rules promulgated thereunder by the Board, that the classification designated "Teacher of Handicapped Children" and appearing on page 360 of the Class Specifications and Compensation Plan of the University of Illinois, hereby is abolished.

Professor Britton commented on this matter. On motion of Mr. Williamson, this resolution was adopted. OPEN SESSION The Board, in open session, considered the following matters presented by the Provost, acting for the President of the University.

AWARD OF CERTIFICATES OF CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT (1) The Committee on Accountancy recommends that the certificate of Certified Public Accountant be awarded the following under Section 5 of the Accountancy Act of 1943. These persons have presented evidence that they are holders of valid and unrevoked C.P.A. certificates issued by other states on the basis of their having successfully passed regular written examinations. They have also satisfied all other requirements of this section of the act.

LEAVES OF ABSENCE FOR M E M B E R S OF THE STAFF

(.2) I have authorized leaves of absence with full pay in the following cases, and request confirmation. Professor ROGER ADAMS, Head of the Department of Chemistry. The National Academy of Sciences is assembling another scientific group to go to Japan for two or three weeks at the request of General Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, for conferences with Japanese scientists. Professor Adams has been asked to serve on this mission. I t will require his absence from the University from approximately November 19 to December 29.
