Funds are available in the State appropriation for this building. I concur and request that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute the above additions to this contract.

On motion of Mr. McLaughlin, authority was given as recommended.

ADDITION TO THE GENERAL CONTRACT FOR CHEMISTRY BUILDING (14) The Director of the Physical Plant Department and the Comptroller recommend an addition of $2,812.73 to the contract with the John Felmley Company for the general work on the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Building to provide for: 1. Substitution of Acoustone and Acousti-Celetox in lieu of acoustical plaster specified $1 665 62 2. Furnishing and installing of a gas cylinder shelter for the storage of gases under high pressures 1 147 11 Funds are available for these additions in the State appropriation for this building. I concur and request that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute the above additions to the contract.

On motion of Mr. Livingston, authority was given as recommended.

AWARD OF CONTRACTS FOR ALTERATIONS IN THE MEN'S OLD GYMNASIUM (15) On January 8, 1048 (Minutes, page 960), the Board of Trustees appropriated $26,000 for alterations and lockers in the Men's Old Gymnasium. This project was not considered to be of top priority, and the work was postponed. Now that higher priority projects are under way, this one may go ahead. Since this is a remodeling job, it is not feasible to secure competitive bids. The Director of the Physical Plant Department and the Comptroller recommend that the work be done by the following contractors under the terms of their standing contracts on a cost plus a fee basis for minor remodeling as approved by the Board of Trustees on July 22, 1948 (Minutes, page 18): Estimated Cost General Work — Lewis S. Colbert $15 798 97 Plumbing — Reliable Plumbing and Heating Co 5 500 00 I concur and request that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute these contracts.

On motion of Mr. Nickell, authority was given as recommended.

PURCHASES (16) There are submitted recommendations for purchases for approval by the Board and a report of purchases authorized by the President of the University (see Appendix, page 163).

On motion of Mr. McKelvey, purchases were authorized as recommended, and the action of the President of the University in authorizing emergency purchases was approved and confirmed.

GIFTS AND GRANTS OF FUNDS FOR RESEARCH AND OTHER PURPOSES (17) A report of gifts and grants of funds for research and other purposes received by the University since the last report on July 22, 1948 (see Appendix, page 165).

CANCELLATION OF SABBATICAL LEAVE OF ABSENCE GIVEN PROFESSOR RAYMOND P. STEARNS (18) Associate Professor Raymond P . Stearns of the Department of History was given a sabbatical leave of absence for the second semester of 1948-1949 by the Board of Trustees on March 9, 1948.
