to determine whether or not a patent application shall be filed and to determine the disposition of the title to and the rights under any application or patent that may result. T h e Government has asked for an assignment by the discoverer of his rights in the discovery. T h e Committee recommends that the discoverer be authorized to execute such an assignment and that the University release to the United States Government any rights which it may have therein. 3. Methods for the preparation of sulfuryl fluoride, and a practical method for the manufacture of sulfamide, by Dr. Mark M. Woyski, Instructor in Chemistry. T h e H e a d of the Department of Chemistry is of the opinion that these methods are of scientific interest only and he doubts the practicability of these operations in any commercial processes. The Committee recommends that this discovery be released to the discoverer. I concur in the recommendations of the Committee. P r o f e s s o r Britton presented this matter. O n m o t i o n of D r . AUTHORIZATION OF HONORARY DEGREES (5) T h e University Senate has selected the following Committee on Honorary Degrees: Professor ROGER ADAMS, Head of the Department of Chemistry, Chairman1 Professor H . M. GRAY, Department of Economics, and Associate Dean of the Graduate School Professor WILLIAM E. CARROLL, Department of Animal Husbandry, and Associate Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station Professor HENNING LARSEN, Head of the Department of English Professor WILLIAM L. EVERITT, Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering Dr. ERIC OLDBERG, Professor and Head of the Department of Neurology and Neurological Surgery I recommend that the Board of Trustees authorize the award of not to exceed eight honorary degrees to be conferred at the time of the installation of the President of the University, May 16, 1947, on the nomination of this Committee and the recommendation of the President of the University, and with the approval of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees if it becomes necessary to act between meetings of the full Board. O n m o t i o n of D r . M e y e r , t h i s a u t h o r i t y w a s g r a n t e d a s r e c o m mended. PURCHASE OF CLARK PROPERTY (6) The recommendation for an additional appropriation of $10,000 to cover the outside possible cost of the purchase of the Clark property was referred to the Committee on Buildings and Grounds for appraisal and recommendation to the Board (Minutes, January 25, 1947, page 216). M r . McKelvey commented on this matter a n d recommended that the a p p r o p r i a t i o n be m a d e . O n m o t i o n of D r . M e y e r , t h i s p u r c h a s e w a s a u t h o r i z e d , a n d t h e appropriation was made, by the following vote: Aye, M r . Livingston, Dr. M e y e r ; absent, M r . Davis. APPROPRIATION TO ALUMNI ASSOCIATION (7) T h e University of Illinois Alumni Association requested an appropriation of $48,773 from University funds for operating expenses during the fiscal year beginning July I, 1946, of which amount $39,553 was appropriated. T h e officers of the Association have requested that because of the great increase in the cost of maintaining the Alumni Records the original request for an appropriation of $48,773 be reconsidered. I recommend that a supplementary appropriation of $9,220 be made to the Alumni Records Office for the balance of the current fiscal year. O n m o t i o n of D r . M e y e r , t h i s a p p r o p r i a t i o n w a s m a d e a s r e c o m 1 Professor Adams subsequently asked to be excused from this assignment, and Professor Larsen agreed to serve as Chairman.
