amount of time provided by the position unless indicated herein or otherwise approved by the President. All unexpended balances remaining in the salary budget lapse at the close of each calendar month unless previously assigned or encumbered. Departmental appropriations are made under the captions "Salaries," "Wages," and "Expense and Equipment." No transfers may be made between "Salaries" and other captions except with the approval of the President of the University. Requests for suck changes should be submitted to the Comptroller. Adjustments may be made between "Wages" and "Expense and Equipment" upon written request to the Comptroller. Appropriations for Expense and Equipment, Wages, and Nonrecurring items are available for one year beginning July I, 1946, and ending June 30, 1947. All unexpended balances in Wages appropriations lapse June 30, 1947, and unencumbered balances in Expense and Equipment appropriations lapse on that date. Allowable encumbrances for which funds will be carried forward on J u n e 30, 1947, are only those for the purchase of equipment and other capital items. All new positions classified as permanent and continuous should be included in the salary budget and must not be charged to any wages appropriation except in those departments submitting supplemental budgets detailing such wage appropriations. Unless otherwise indicated in the Budget: 1. T h e service required under appointments in this budget to positions on the teaching faculty covers the academic year of the University, not including the Summer Semester. Salaries of such positions of the rank of Assistant Professor and above are paid in twelve equal monthly installments; salaries of other ranks, in nine equal monthly installments. 2. The service required in administrative, clerical, and service positions is for a full year of twelve months, with allowance for vacations, and salaries are paid in twelve equal monthly installments. All such positions in the academic budget are indicated by the letter "Y" following the tenure symbol. Symbols: A — Indefinite tenure. Housing: In a number of instances, as a practical and emergency arrangement, housing facilities are being temporarily furnished to staff members without charge, for the convenience of the University. As rapidly as possible, the arrangements are being revised, and final determination as to each case is being concluded.
