BOAKD OF TRUSTEES

[February 21

COMPTROLLER'S REPORT OF CONTRACTS EXECUTED (20) The Comptroller's report of contracts executed from January 11 to February 10, 1948 (see Appendix, page 1036).

This report was received for record.

QUARTERLY REPORT O F THE COMPTROLLER (21) The Comptroller presents his quarterly report to the Board as of September 30, 1947. Copies of this report have been sent to all members of the Board in advance of this meeting.

This report was received for record.

PURCHASE O F COAL FOR URBANA-CHAMPAIGN POWER PLANT (22) T h e Director of Purchases reports: "On July 1, 1947, we placed a contract with Taylor-English Coal Company for 30,000 tons and with Bell & Zoller Coal Company for 8,000 tons (Minutes, June 23, 1947, page 399). It was contemplated that coal received on these contracts would meet our requirements but the severe weather this winter has resulted in greater consumption than had been estimated and the mines being unable to meet their schedules. The amount of storage has been reduced to 3,500 tons which is not sufficient reserve as it represents but one month's supply. The purchase of 3,000 tons of coal to replenish our reserve stock is recommended to enable us to increase our reserve to two months' supply by April 1." Quotations were solicited from 22 companies; the following were received: ApproxiPrice mate f.o.b. Freight Delivered tonnage mine rates price £6.25 C. V. Beck & Company, Inc., St. Louis . 3750 Si-75 «4-5° Bell & Zoller Coal Company, Chicago.. . 1350 6.60 2.10 4-50 Lafayette Coal Company, Chicago 1000 6.50 4-75 i-75 T h e Director of Purchases, the Director of the Physical Plant Department, and the Comptroller recommend that an order be placed with C. V. Beck & Company, Inc., the lowest bidder, for 3,000 tons at a cost of $13,500, plus $5,250 freight, or a total cost of $18,750. I concur.

On motion of Mrs. Holt, this purchase was authorized as recommended, subject to constitutional provisions.

AWARD OF CONTRACT FOR CONCRETE FLOOR IN TEMPORARY WAREHOUSE (23) At the request of the University, the Federal W o r k s Agency extended the foundation of the temporary warehouse to a greater depth than is their usual practice in temporary construction of this kind. This was done with the understanding that if the F.W.A. did not have the funds to complete the project the deeper foundation would be constructed in lieu of a finished concrete floor (which approximately equaled the cost of the additional foundation work) and that the University would complete the work. T h e deeper foundation was advantageous to the University since it would provide additional storage space. It has been determined that the Federal W o r k s Agency will not have the money to complete the floor. T h e Physical Plant Department has secured the following quotations on a finished reinforced concrete floor: E. N . DeAtley, $5,000; Kuhne-Simmons Co., Inc., $4,502; C. A. Petry and Sons, $4,420. T h e Director of the Physical Plant Department and the Comptroller recommend the award of a contract to C. A. Petry and Sons, the lowest bidder, in the amount of $4,420. Funds are available. I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and Secretary of the Board of Trustees be authorized to execute this contract.

On motion of Mr. McKelvey, this contract was awarded and authorization was given as recommended.
