APPROPRIATION FOR MICROSCOPES FOR THE CHICAGO PROFESSIONAL COLLEGES (20) It is necessary to add thirty microscopes to the microscope rental pool at the Chicago Professional Colleges to take care of increased enrollment in the fall of 1956. The College of Medicine will admit 190 in the first-year class, an increase of twenty-four students, and the first class of the College of Dentistry will go into the second year with ten more students than the preceding second-year class. Microscopes are rented from the pool to first- and second-year students in the College of Medicine and to first-, second-, and third-year students in the College of Dentistry. The Vice-President in Charge of the Chicago Professional Colleges, the Provost, and the Comptroller recommend a special appropriation of $9,330 to cover the cost of the addition of thirty instruments to the rental pool. I concur and recommend that this appropriation be made from the General Reserve Fund.

On motion of Mr. Johnston, this appropriation was made by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Bissell, Mr. Herrick, Mrs. Holt, Mr. Johnston, Mr. Livingston, Mr. Megran, Mr. Williamson; no, none; absent, Mr. Nickell, Mr. Stratton, Mr. Swain, Mrs. Watkins.

CONTRACTS FOR CONSTRUCTION OF BAND BUILDING (21) The Director of the Physical Plant and the Comptroller recommend award of the following contracts for the construction of the new Band Building, the award in each case being to the lowest bidder. General — Kuhne-Simmons Co., Inc., Champaign $412 544 00 Electrical — Fedco Electric Contractors, Inc., Danville 62 620 00 Plumbing and Heating — B & E Plumbing and Heating, Champaign... 126 018 22 Ventilating — Schroeder and Sons, Champaign 46 302 00 Elevator Installations — Long Elevator and Machine Company, Springfield 8 633 00 Total of Contracts $656 117 22 Recommendations for the purchase of fixed equipment for this building will be submitted later. Funds are available in the state appropriations to the University for the biennium 1955-57 for buildings and other permanent improvements. The item for the Band Building is $787,000, of which $40,000 has already been released by the Governor. 1 recommend that these contracts be awarded and that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute the same, subject to the release of funds by the Governor.

CONTRACT FOR PROFESSIONAL SERVICES ON DESIGNING RESIDENCE HALLS FOOD STORAGE BUILDING AND APPROPRIATION (22) The program for the construction of new student housing, as approved by the Board of Trustees, provides for the construction of a central food storage building to service the dining facilities in the new residence halls for men and women. It is essential that this service building be available for use by the fall of '958 when the addition to the Lincoln Avenue Residence and the second group
