BOARD OF TRUSTEES

[January 5

point was not m a d e clear to the Board of Trustees and Dr. Stoddard at the December meeting when the Board action was taken. In as much as t h e situation does exist, however, and in view of the attitude expressed by Colonel Hannah and the University P o s t of the American Legion, as well as the position of D r . Stoddard in his letter addressed to you on December 27, 1945,1 feel that the best interest of the University and returning veterans, whom we are attempting to serve, justifies rescinding .of the Board action a t its December meeting and the approval of the appointment of Colonel H a n n a h as Director of the Division of Special Service for W a r Veterans. It is my sincere hope that all interested parties will keep in mind the situation which exists during this period of transition and continue to extend wholehearted cooperation in.all matters affecting the general good and future welfare of the University. Very truly yours,

CHESTER R . ; D A V I S 2. P A R T OF LETTER FROM M R . CHESTER R. D A V I S TO PRESIDENT A. C. WILLARD .

August 10, 194s . President A. C. Willard University of Illinois Urbana, Illinois

DEAR D R . W I L L A R D :

Coleman Griffith was in the office yesterday afternoon to discuss with P a r k Livingston and me a tentative chart of internal organization of the University, as developed by his Committee. P a r k and I made some suggested changes and requested Dr. Griffith to submit the amended chart to you and Dr. Stoddard for your personal comments and criticism before going further with either the Faculty or Trustees' Committee. We had several specific comments and criticisms. In the first place, the Veterans' Division was no place shown on the chart; and I believe you agree with my conviction that this is of utmost importance in our educational program I have had several visits from veterans attending the University recently, and I am not sure t h a t , t h e program is functioning properly. I have also had some discussions with "Mr. Hostettler of the Veterans Bureau on the subject. In discussing the matter with Coleman Griffith yesterday he advised me that Director Glenn was critically ill. and gave that as a possible reason that the program was not functioning as efficiently as it should be doing. I am wondering if it would not be possible to secure the release of Colonel Shumway from the Army to assume directorship of the Veterans Division. Not only is he a veteran of World W a r I and W o r l d W a r II, but he has been in direct charge of the General Staff Section and was formerly Assistant Dean of the College of Liberal A r t s at Illinois. I have had a number of contacts with him in connection with the work which I am doing in the American Bankers Association Committee on Service for W a r Veterans, and am convinced of his knowledge, interest, and ability. H e was not, of course, available when we first conceived the idea of a separate Division for Veterans, but I am certain that he could do the job which we want .-done at Illinois. [Five paragraphs on other subjects are omitted.] Sincerely,

CHESTER R. DAVIS 3. P A R T OF LETTER FROM PRESIDENT A. C. WILLARD TO M R . CHESTER R. D A V I S

August 22, 1945 Honorable Chester R. Davis 60 West Washington Street Chicago 2, Illinois

DEAR M R . D A V I S :

This is in reply to your letter of August 10 concerning the matters discussed by Provost Coleman R. Griffith with you and P a r k Livingston on August 9: 1. T h e division of Special Services for W a r Veterans. Director Sidney E. Glenn went to the hospital for an examination and treat-
