This matter was referred to the President of the University for study in relation to the cost of living, for report to the Board in connection with the annual budget or earlier.

ACTIONS OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

At this point, President Livingston reported actions of the Executive Committee in approving the award of contracts for painting temporary houses for veterans, equipment for the Abbott Power Plant, and the improvement of the road to the University of Illinois Airport. On motion of Mrs. Grigsby, these reports were received for record.

Painting Temporary Houses T h e Executive Committee received the following bids for exterior painting of the 275 temporary houses secured from the Federal Public Housing Authority and now occupied by student veterans: KuhneKeith Charles Simmons Gordon Williams Base bid, 17 houses, two coats J 1 245 00 $ 1 360 00 $ 1 207 00 Alternate A, additional 258 houses, one coat + 1 2 392 00 + 1 0 337 00 + 1 1 149 00 Alternate B, painting of coal b o x e s . . . + 1 7 7 00 + 3 5 5 00 + 2 0 9 00 Alternate C, use of four colors + 2 5 0 00 + 2 0 0 00 + 3 ° 3 00 Bid deposit 750 00 622 06 650 00 T h e base bid includes two coats for seventeen houses that had originally received a priming coat of paint only. Alternate A includes one coat of paint for the remaining 258 houses that had originally received two coats of paint. Alternate B covers the painting of the coal boxes. Included in the specifications was Alternate C which provided for a variety of colors so that all of the houses would not be alike, but it is not believed that this is worth the additional cost. This is an item of work for which we would expect to be reimbursed by the government or out of income from rent.
