at the southeast corner of Polk and Wood Streets, Chicago, which is in the area of expansion approved by the Board of Trustees and is an important property in this area. H e recommends that the Board authorize a request to the Medical Commission that proceedings under its right of eminent domain be started, to acquire this property for the use of the University. I concur and recommend approval and request the adoption of the resolution which follows. Whereas, under the Act of the General Assembly, approved J u n e 4, 1941, establishing a Medical Center District in the City of Chicago, and Whereas, the Medical Center District is located in the general vicinity of the Chicago Colleges and Hospitals of the University of Illinois, and Whereas, under said Act the Medical Center Commission is the administrative agency established by the Act for the carrying out of its purposes, and Whereas, the Medical Center Commission, under the Act, possesses the power to acquire land for the purposes of the Act within the District, by purchase, gift, lease, or by condemnation proceedings under the provisions of "An Act to provide for the exercise of the right of Eminent Domain," and Whereas, the Medical Center Commission has power under the Act to "sell or lease any parcel of real estate to any medical or allied educational institution . . . " to be used "subject to the restrictions of the Act," and Whereas, the Medical Center Commission has offered to acquire by condemnation proceedings, lands in the District desired by the University for its purposes which are within the scope of said Act, and Whereas, certain advantages will accrue to the University if it accepts the offer of the Medical Center Commission to acquire the lot located at the Southeast corner of Polk and Wood Streets, Chicago: Therefore, be it resolved, that the President of the University be and he is hereby authorized and directed to empower the Medical Center Commission to institute eminent domain proceedings for the purpose of acquiring title to said lot of land, under such terms and conditions as the President may decide on in the interests of the University, provided that the sum to be paid by the University to the Medical Center Commission as the price of the property shall not be in excess of the award in the condemnation proceedings, with costs of acquisition. O n m o t i o n of M r . F o r n o f , t h i s p r o c e d u r e w a s a p p r o v e d a s r e c o m mended, a n d the resolution was adopted, by the following vote: Aye, M r . Davis, Mr. Fornof, M r s . Grigsby, M r . Livingston, D r . Luken, M r . McKelvey, D r . Meyer, M r . Nickell; no, n o n e ; absent, M r . Green, Mr. McLaughlin, Mr. Williamson. PURCHASE OF NAVY EQUIPMENT (13) Under the contracts with the United States Navy for training programs at the University, all equipment, including fixed equipment and building alterations, are the property of the Navy when paid for by it. Under the contracts the University is given the first opportunity to purchase such items. Discussions have been carried on recently between Navy representatives and the Comptroller and other University officers with respect to the settlement of these contracts.
