Donovan of the Department of A r t requests a sabbatical leave of absence for the second semester of 1944-1945 (six months from March J I . 945), with pay, in accordance with the University Statutes. H e wishes to spend this time investigating methods and technical approaches being used in other schools in the United States in the field of advertising design, with the view of strengthening the University's work in commercial design, which is under his immediate supervision. H e also plans to spend a part of the time in painting and study. T h e department can make provision for his teaching program during the period of his absence without additional expense to the University. It is to the University's advantage to have him take his sabbatical leave next year rather than at some future time. Professor Donovan has been a member of the faculty for twenty-five years. I recommend approval.

On motion of Mr. Davis, this leave was granted as recommended.

RESIGNATION O F DEAN H . M. MARJER1SON (6) Dean H . M. Marjerison has submitted his resignation as Professor and Dean of the College of Dentistry, effective September 1, 1944, to accept the position of Associate Director of the Forsyth Dental Infirmary for Children in Boston, Massachusetts. His letter of resignation follows: College of Dentistry Dr. Arthur Cutts Willard July 10, 1944 President, University of Illinois Urbana, Illinois

M Y DEAR M R . PRESIDENT :

I am herewith submitting my resignation as Dean of the College of Dentistry and Professor of Dentistry, to accept a position as Associate Director of the Forsyth Dental Infirmary for Children in Boston, Massachusetts, the resignation to become effective September I, 1944. My decision to leave the University of Illinois is based on the fact that I have been associated for a number of years with the Forsyth as Trustee, and that the opportunity which is offered to me at this institution is unusual in the field of dentistry. I know of no other deanship which would attract me from the University of Illinois, inasmuch as I believe that one of the greatest possibilities in the country exists here to develop dentistry as a university discipline. May I express to you my deep appreciation for your counsel and support during my term of office, and to all administrative officers of the University with whom it has been a pleasure and privilege to be associated. Sincerely yours,

HOWARD M. MARJERISON

I recommend that this resignation be accepted.

On motion of Mr. Jensen, this recommendation was adopted, and the Secretary was instructed to record in the minutes and send to Dean Marjerison the following expression of the Board's appreciation of his services:

Dean Marjerison brought to the College of Dentistry and the University of Illinois a broad viewpoint and program which envisaged the development of dental education and research as a university discipline. In his four years with
