10. American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Illinois, $50 for an award for the promotion of small-bore rifle practice. 11. Illinois Congress of Parents and Teachers, $400 for a scholarship. 12. Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign W a r s , $50 for an award to a worthy student in the R.O.T.C. 13. Tennessee Coal, Iron, and Railroad Company, $1,450 for research on steel brake shoes. 14. J. W . Ruettinger, $500 for the John C. Ruettinger Memorial Scholarship. 15. Mrs. Kittie B. Pierce, $500 for the Phyllis Pierce Ruettinger Scholarship.

PURCHASES RECOMMENDED (SUPPLEMENTARY) (39) A recommendation that the following purchases be authorized: 1. 7,500 diplomas from the W . M. Welch Manufacturing Company, the lowest bidder, at a total cost of $2,325, f.o.b. Urbana. This represents a two-year supply. It is advisable to buy this quantity at the present time because of the possibility of discontinuance of importation of parchments. 2. One Miehle Vertical Printing Press for the Print Shop, from the Miehle Printing Press & Mfg. Co., Chicago, at a net price of $2,603. This is not a competitive item as it is necessary to purchase the type of press best suited for University needs.

On motion of Mr. Davis, these purchases were authorized as recommended. On motion of Mr. Davis, Mr. Fornof was appointed to study the printing facilities and to make such recommendations to the Board as seem to him wise.

PURCHASES AUTHORIZED (SUPPLEMENTARY) (40) A report of the following purchases authorized by the President of the University in accordance with the University Statutes: 1. Drapes and curtains, including installation, as specified by the consulting Interior Decorator and approved by the Committee on Furnishing and Interior Decorating for the Union Building, Chicago, from Marshall Field and Company, the lowest bidder, at a cost of $1,500. 2. Draperies for student rooms in the Men's Residence Hall, as specified by the Physical Plant Department, from W . Lewis and Company, Champaign, the lowest bidder, at a price of $1,052.91 installed. 3. Four 34" x 74" flat-top table-type museum cases for displaying rare books in the corridors of the Library, from Remington Rand, Inc., the lowest bidder, at a cost of $1,504.28, f.o.b. Urbana. J O H N PETER ALTGELD

1847-1902 Governor of Illinois and a Trustee of the University of Illinois, 1893-1897 Because of his insight into the essential relations between education and the state, his term as Governor and Trustee marks an epoch in the history of the University of Illinois. This building, in the planning of which he took an active part, originally housed the University Library. T h e College of Law. in the organization of which he was also deeply interested, has occupied it since 1927.
