Society of Women Engineers October 25, 1972 lUl E. E. Building

University of Illinois Student Section

The student section of the Society of Women Engineers held a meeting October 25, 1972 at 7 p.m. in 11*1 E. E. Building* The meeting was called to order by Carolyn Kinney. The minutes were read and corrected, and attendance was taken. The USI tour of October 10, 1972, was discussed. During a bus tour of the plant the group visited the Tibular Water Reactor to observe the production of polyethylene resins. The tour included visits to pilot laboratories where aluminum was bonded to plastic and paper. Information concerning the special activities of other organizations this month was isade available to members, and they were encouraged to become involved with North of Green after being shown a sample copy. It was announced that the next meeting would be held Kbvember lh? At that time Dr. Heinss Von Foerster will speak on "The Sew Engineer and the Old Responsibilities." Luanne Beinke reported on Engineering Council. The Engineering Open House theme for 1973 is "Engineering Makes a World of Difference,11 Those people who would be willing to visit high schools to encourage students to enter engineering were told to contact Doris Wilraor from Speaker1 s Bureau. Carolyn Kinney read an excerpt from the SWE newsletter commanding the U. of I. section and ranking it in the tip seven student sections in the countiy. lillian Gilbreth Scholarship applications were given to Interested sophomores and juniors. In order to raise money to send a representative to the national conference in June, 1°73* in San Francisco, the society decided to sell green hats to deans and other societies for Engineering Open House and St. Pat's Ball. Illinois Bell Telephone Company has been contacted in reference to becoming a travelling sponsor. Miss Wilson discussed the possibility of compiling a brochure listing all the women engineering students interested in summer work and distributing this to various industries. Ron Carr, Keith Mosley, Bob Seldon, and Bob Wyman, recruiters from Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in San Francisco, California were the ^uest speakers. They discussed their plant, the opportunities available there, and b&glxma. policy of affirmative action. This included an explanation of laser fusion. They also discussed trends in engineering and opportunities in general for women. The meeting mas adjourned and refreshments were served. Respectfully submitted,
