MINUTES APPROVED

The Secretary presented the minutes of the meetings of the Board of Trustees on July 2 and August 1, 1963, press proof copies of which have previously been sent to the Board. On motion of Mr. Swain, these minutes were approved as printed on pages 677 to 743, inclusive.

BUSINESS PRESENTED BY T H E PRESIDENT OF T H E UNIVERSITY T h e Board took up consideration of the following reports and recommendations from the President of the University.

PRESIDENT'S REPORT

President H e n r y presented a report on selected topics of current interest, copies of which were distributed at the meeting, and a copy was filed with the Secretary of the Board.

AWARD O F CERTIFIED PUBLIC ACCOUNTANT CERTIFICATES (1) The Committee on Accountancy recommends that the certificate of Certified Public Accountant be awarded, under Section 5 of the Accountancy Act of 1943, as amended, to the following candidates who have presented evidence that they are holders of valid and unrevoked Certified Public Accountant certificates obtained by passing a standard written examination in another state or territory of the United States and who qualify in all other respects under this provision of the law: Name

HONORARY DEGREE (2) T h e Urbana-Champaign Senate has recommended the conferring of the honorary degree of Doctor of Music on Marian Anderson, concert and opera singer. During the season of 1964-65, Miss Anderson will make her farewell appearances as a performing artist. Since her professional career was launched in the United States in the early 1930's, she has sung to millions of music lovers both in this country and abroad. She has given recitals at the University of Illinois on two occasions. The degree will be conferred at the Commencement Exercises at UrbanaChampaign on June 13, 1964. O n m o t i o n of M r . D i l l i a r d , t h i s d e g r e e w a s a u t h o r i z e d . APPOINTMENTS TO T H E FACULTY (3) The following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant P r o fessor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. 1. NELDA E. ALGER, Assistant Professor of Zoology, beginning June 1, 1964, at an annual salary of $11,000. 2. EDMUND G. ANDERSON, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, College of Medicine, beginning June 1, 1964, at an annual salary of $13,000. 3. R. WARWICK ARMSTRONG, Assistant Professor of Geography, one year from September 1, 1964, at a salary of $8,000.
