1961-62 which is summarized as follows with comparative figures for the preceding year: 1960-61 1961-62 $1 17° 915 $1 249 735 rn,ome Appropriations , 1 17S 565 1245 652 Excess of Income over Appropriations 4 330 4 083 The budget has been examined and approved by the Vice-President and Provost and the Vice-President and Comptroller. ] recommend that this budget be approved and that the President of the University be authorized to make such changes and adjustments, including approval of new appointments and acceptances of resignations, as are necessary and recommended by the Board of Directors of the Athletic Association within the total income realized.

On motion of Mr. Harewood, this budget was approved,

APPOINTMENT OF DR. MARIETTA STEVENSON

(3) Professor Marietta Stevenson, Director cf the Jane Addams Graduate School of Social Work, had previously elected to retire on September 1, 1961, and her request was approved. In view of the fact that her successor can not take over until February 1, 1962, she has agreed to continue in active service and I therefore recommend renewal of her appointment as Professor of Social Work and Director of the Jane Addams Graduate School o£ Social Work for the period September 1, 1961, through January 31, 1962, at a total salary of $7,294 for this period.

On motion of Mr. DUliard, this appointment was approved.

APPOINTMENT O F DIRECTOR O F SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK

(4) I recommend the appointment of Dr. Mark P. Hale, presently Professor and Director of the School of Social Work at the State University of Iowa, as Professor of Social Work on indefinite tenure, and Director of the Jane Addams Graduate School of Social Work from February 1, 1962, through Augnst 31, 1%3, at an annual salary of $17,500 on a twelve-month service basi3. The nomination for this appointment was initiated by a special search committee1 appointed to canvass the field of available and qualified candidates and to make recommendations. The Executive Committee of the School has been consulted as have been the Vice-President and Provost and the Dean of the Graduate College. This appointment will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Director Marietta Stevenson from active service. On motion of Mr. Dilliard, this appointment was approved.

APPOINTMENT O F LEGAL COUNSEL

(5) I recommend the appointment of Mr. James Jr Costello, presently a memtar of the firm of Clark and Costello, 135 South LaSalle Street Chicago, Illinois, as Legal Counsel for two years from September 1, 1961, at an annual salary of $20,000 on a twelve-month service basis. The nomination for this appointment was initiated by a special search committee' and is concurred in by all recommending officers concerned. The appointment is to fill the vacancy created by the change in status of Mr. Ralph F. Usemann, who has been Legal Counsel for the University since July, 1951, and who has asked to be relieved of this administrative assignment for reasons of health. The Board on March 14, 1961, approved a change in his status to fecial Counsel on 45 per cent time for such assignments of legal work as can « carried on by him under this arrangement.

On motion of Mr. Swain, this appointment was approved.
