UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS REQUEST OP DR. ANDREW C. IVY

645

The Vice-President and Provost and the Vice-President in charge of the Chicago Professional Colleges reported that Dr. Andrew C. Ivy, Distinguished Professor of Physiology and Head of the Department of Clinical Science, who hag readied the statutory age of retirement, has requested that: The Department of Clinical Science be continued for one year from September 1, 1961, with a budget of $21,600, exclusive of Dr. Ivy's salary. The Executive Committee of the College of Medicine had previously recommended, the Chicago Professional Colleges Senate concurring therein, that the Department of Clinical Science be discontinued with the retirement of Dr. Ivy. He be continued in active service for one year from September 1, 1961, at his present salary of $18,500; or that if he is retired, he be permitted to continue as Head of the Department of Clinical Science for one year from September 1, 1961, and that laboratory facilities and funds for his research program, including salaries of some of his present staff, be provided. Following discussion of these reports, it was the consensus of the Executive Committee and of the other Trustees present that action on Dr. Ivy's request be deferred pending actions by the Dean and the Executive Committee of the College of Medicine and by the President of the University.

APPOINTMENT OF LEGAL COUNSEL

The Secretary presented a brief report concerning a recommendation which will be made by the President of the University to the Board of Trustees on August 10, 1961, concerning the appointment to this position. The Trustees have previously been informed tbat Mr. James J. Costello of the law firm of Clark and Costello., 135 South La Salle Street, Chicago, will be recommended for this appointment, and that he has agreed to accept. The Trustees have informally indicated their approval of the appointment.

COMPLAINT OF ALVIN W . CROWLEY

Chairman Williamson informed the Committee that he has received a request from Mr. Alvin W. Crowley, a former nonacademic employee, tor a hearing by the Board of Trustees regarding termination of his employment. Mr. Crowley was employed in the Department of Physics at Urbana- Champaign with the civil service classification of Instrument Maker on May 18, 1959. His employment was terminated before expiration of the standard six-month probationary period. He had instituted legal proceedings in the Circuit Court of Champaign County for an injunction to prevent his dismissal, alleging that it was illegal, but the petition was denied by the Court. It was the consensus of the Executive Committee and of the other Trustees present that Mr. Crowley should not be given a hearing by !he Board of Trustees since his proper recourse is to the Merit Board °f the University Civil Service System of Illinois. On motion of Mrs. Frances B. Watkins, the Committee adjourned.
