Municipal Park Administration. Authorization of a new municipal park administration option in the Department of Recreation to meet the urgent need for competent personnel in the rapidly growing park systems throughout the state of Illinois and the nation. There is no institution of higher learning in Illinois where preparation and training for this work is available. Submitted herewith are the details of this new option, a copy of which is being filed with the Secretary of the Board for record. T h e Senate Coordinating Council indicates that no other Senate jurisdiction is involved. Dance. Authorization of a new curriculum in dance leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Dance, in the Department of Physical Education for Women. The new curriculum will contribute to the program of the College and will offer basic preparation for dance performers, choreographers, and producers. It includes general education courses in humanities, social sciences, and biological sciences, and courses in the related arts of theatre, music, and art. T h e proposed curriculum is related directly to the degree of Master of Arts in Dance now offered, and is in addition to the option in teacher education curriculum in dance which fulfills the present requirements of a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education for women preparing to teach in public schools. Submitted herewith are the details of the new curriculum, a copy of which is being filed with the Secretary of the Board for record. T h e Senate Coordinating Council indicates that no other Senate jurisdiction is involved. I recommend approval of the above proposals, subject to further action by the new State Board of Higher Education. O n m o t i o n of M r . S w a i n , t h e f o r e g o i n g r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s were approved. Physical Education for Men. T h e Urbana-Champaign Senate Committee on Educational Policy recommends, and the Executive Vice-President and Provost concurs, that a new course, Physical Education for Men 225, Supervised Experience in Physical Education, a noncredit course, be required of all students in the professional curriculum in physical education for men. Students in this professional training curriculum will be required to enroll in the new course for one semester during their junior year. Although the Educational Policy Committee and the Office of the Executive Vice-President and Provost have advised that no further Senate or other actions are required, this being a minor change in requirements for graduation, it is nevertheless reported to the Board for record and confirmation. DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN RUSSIAN (7) The Urbana-Champaign Senate recommends extension of the existing graduate program in Russian to include the Doctor of Philosophy degree. T h e formation and expansion of the Department of Russian, the rapid increase of interest in the field, and the number of candidates who wish to pursue studies beyond the recently established master's program indicate a definite need for this graduate program. Admission Requirements. Applicants must meet the scholastic standards established by the Graduate College, and should have the equivalent of at least four years of Russian, including practical work in the use of the language and an advanced course in literature. Degree Requirements. The candidate must meet the general requirements specified by the Graduate College with respect to credit, residence, minors, language proficiencies, thesis research, and the preliminary and final examinations. H e may major in literature or in linguistics, but he must offer one minor in another language or literature, or in linguistics. In addition to fulfilling all general requirements of the Graduate College, a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Russian will be required to have a reading knowledge of French and German and a knowledge of the development of the Russian language, including Church Slavonic (Russian 4(b)T h e candidate will be required to take at least six units in 400 courses (i.e., graduate courses) beyond the master's degree.
