floor in Burrill Hall Addition as described above. This additional floor would bring the new structure up to the full height of Burrill Hall (with considerable improvement in exterior design). In the event that the foundation grant does not materialize, the Chancellor recommends that the additional space be financed from reserve funds accumulated from research grants and contracts (in the amount of $400,000). It seems highly desirable in any case to take advantage of the opportunity to add 8,358 gross square feet of space at a unit cost not only lower than that estimated for the new structure as originally planned ($47.85 vs. $58.82) but far lower than the cost of such laboratory space if added later anywhere on the campus. Furthermore, there is an acute shortage of land in this area for additional building space for the School of Life Sciences; hence it is especially desirable to add the extra floor to Burrill Hall Addition in the interest of better land utilization. It is necessary to proceed with the architectural planning for this structure, without waiting for the foundation's decision on the grant, in order to meet the time schedule for the original project. It will be recalled that the new structure is scheduled for occupancy in September, 1971, by a new "School of Basic Medical Sciences" with an enrollment of thirty-two first-year medical students. The Executive Vice President and Provost and the Vice President and Comptroller approve this recommendation. I concur, subject to approval by the Board of Higher Education. O n m o t i o n of M r .
