Administration, Washington, D.C., as Medical Director of the University of Illinois Hospital, beginning February 1, 1970, on a twelve-month service basis, at an annual salary of $37,000. Dr. Engle will succeed Dr. Donald J. Caseley, who became Vice Chancellor for the Medical Center campus on March 1, 1969. Dr. Engle will also serve as Vice Chancellor at the Medical Center campus and as Association Dean of The Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine within the reorganized College of Medicine. In his role as Vice Chancellor, Dr. Engle will be available for consultation to all colleges at the Medical Center campus concerning hospital and health agency affiliations, and for other duties as assigned by the Chancellor. As Associate Dean, he will serve as liaison officer for educational matters between the University of Illinois Hospital and The Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine. The nomination of Dr. Engle is made with the advice of a search committee.' The Executive Vice President and Provost concurs. I recommend approval. O n m o t i o n of M r . CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY, URBANA (5) The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has recommended to the Chancellor at Urbana-Champaign the appointment of Dr. Winton U. Solberg, presently Professor of History, as Professor of History on indefinite tenure and Chairman of the Department of History beginning September 1, 1970, on an academic year service basis, at an annual salary of $20,600. Professor Solberg will replace Professor Clark C. Spence who was reappointed as Chairman for two years beginning September 1, 1969. Professor Spence has asked to be relieved of this administrative appointment effective September 1, 1970. The nomination is submitted after consultation with members of the Department and on recommendation of its Executive Committee. The nomination is supported by the Executive Committee of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Dean of the Graduate College. The Chancellor at Urbana-Champaign approves the recommendation, and the Executive Vice President and Provost concurs. I recommend approval.

On motion of Mr. Steger, this appointment was approved.

CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION, URBANA (6) The Dean of the College of Education has recommended to the Chancellor at Urbana-Champaign the appointment of Dr. Clarence J. Karier, presently P r o fessor of History of Education, as Professor of History of Education and Chairman of the Department of History and Philosophy of Education beginning the second semester of the current academic year 1969-70, on an academic year service basis, at an annual salary of $20,000. Dr. Karier will succeed Dr. B. Othanel Smith who asked to be relieved of this administrative assignment at the end of the first semester of the current academic year. The nomination is submitted after consultation with the Executive Committee of the Department. The nomination is supported by the Executive Committee of the College of Education and the Dean of the Graduate College. The Chancellor at Urbarta-Champaign approves the recommendation. The Executive Vice President and Provost concurs. I recommend approval.

On motion of Mr. Grimes, this appointment was approved.
