One of them has been approved by the Board of Trustees and is now under review by the Board of Higher Education (engineering — solids and fluids). Five others will be presented to the Board of Higher Education during the present academic year: biology, German, physics, psychology, and sociology. These departments are believed clearly to meet the standards of quality established for the programs already approved, and it is hoped that they can be initiated in September, 1969. The seventh program, a doctorate in English, is being planned for initiation in 1970, These new doctoral programs will serve several important purposes: (a) help to meet the growing shortage of college teachers; (b) provide the only opportunities available to students in the Chicago area for advanced graduate study in a public university; (c) supply the junior academic staff needed to assist senior faculty members in teaching the rapidly expanding enrollment; (d) facilitate the addition and retention of faculty of high quality, thus enhancing the University's capability for contributing to the intellectual, economic, and cultural development of the Chicago metropolitan area. In order to offer these advanced programs, it will be necessary to have special funds for staff, expense, and equipment beyond the amounts provided by the enrollment-increase formula.
