PURCHASE OF BUILDINGS ON KIMMEL FARM (15) T h e Board of Trustees has authorized the purchase from Mrs. Alice N. Kimmel of her farm consisting of 171.82 acres in the northeast corner of Section 2, Tolono Township, in Champaign County. The agreement for the purchase provides that the purchase price will include the residence but not the other buildings on the farm. Mrs. Kimmel has offered to sell the buildings, consisting of a barn, corn crib, machine shed, granary, milk house, and poultry house, to the University for $4,000. The appraised value of these buildings is $4,222, and their replacement value is estimated at $5,300. If this farm is to be used by the University, leased, or resold as a unit, the buildings will be needed.

On motion of Mr. McKelvey, the purchase of these buildings was authorized at a price not to exceed $3,000, and an appropriation of this amount was made from the General Reserve Fund by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Davis, Mr. Fornof, Mrs. Grigsby, Mr. Karraker, Mr. Livingston, Mr. McKelvey, Mr. Nickell; no, none; absent, Mr. Green, Mr. Jensen, Dr. Luken, Dr. Meyer.

TEMPORARY APPOINTMENTS OF NON-CITIZENS TO THE STAFF (16) T h e following appointments to the staff have been approved by the President of the University: 1. Mariano Picon-Salas, Visiting Professor in the Department of Spanish and Italian, February 1 to June 30, 1944, at a salary of $3,000 for this period. Mr. Picon-Salas is a distinguished Venezuelan scholar who has been lecturing at Smith College and Columbia University during the past year. H e has been highly recommended by Columbia University and by the Department of State. 2. Hernan Muguerza, of Monterrey, N. L., Mexico, as Assistant in the Department of Spanish and Italian, from November 1, 1943, to June 30, 1944, at a salary of $1,244.45 for this period. Mr. Muguerza was a student at the University of Illinois during 1942-1943 and will continue his studies. 3. Mehmet Nejat Tokay, Instructor in Civil Engineering on one-half time, and Special Research Assistant in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics on onehalf time, in the College of Engineering and the Engineering Experiment Station, beginning October 1, 1943, and continuing until further notice, at a salary of $200 a month. His appointment as Instructor is to assist in the release of P r o fessor James J. Doland for services as Supervising Engineer during the construction of the University of Illinois Airport and airport buildings. His salary as Special Research Assistant will be paid from funds provided by the cooperative investigation of Reinforced Concrete Slabs. Mr. Tokay is a native of Turkey. 4. Ahmet Munci Ozelsel, Special Research Assistant, on one-half time, in the Department of Civil Engineering, in the Engineering Experiment Station, beginning October 1, 1943, and continuing until further notice, at a salary of $112.50
