sion Association will be instructed by the Department of Animal Husbandry with respect to the selection of suitable animals. 2. Fifty calves, good to choice, average weight 400 to 450 pounds, from the Producers Live Stock Commission Association at an estimated cost of $3,500. This is a non-competitive item as the price will be determined by the market. T h e Chicago Producers Commission Association will be instructed by the Department of Animal Husbandry with respect to the selection of suitable animals. 3. Two hundred and fifty to three hundred good to choice crossbred feeder lambs, average weight about 65-70 pounds, suitable for experimental feeding, at an estimated cost of $2,250 to $2,500. This purchase requires inspection of more than one lot of animals before a selection can be made. T h e price to be paid will depend on the market at the time of purchase. T h e Department of Animal Husbandry will be authorized to inspect and select suitable animals and arrange for their purchase. 4. One hundred twenty-five cases Corning P y r e x laboratory glassware for the Chicago General Stores, from the Central Scientific Company, at a total cost of $2,086.88. 5. Required textbooks for courses in Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry for A.S.T.P. (A-12) to be used by approximately 525 enrollees, from the Chicago Medical Book Company, as required up to the following totals: College of Medicine, $21,000; College of Dentistry, $7,000; total, $28,000. T h e lists of prescribed texts and manuals were submitted by the Dean of each College. Price and discounts are controlled by the Publishers, and distribution for this area is through the Chicago Medical Book Company. All publishers extend 10% discount for resale, except Blakiston and Lea & Febiger whose discount is 15%. Prices to federal, state, and local governmental agencies are the same whether ordered direct from the publisher, or from their jobbers. Distribution policies in the entire medical book field are uniform. 6. Required textbooks for courses in Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry for N.C.T.P. (V-12) to be used by approximately 200 enrollees, from the Chicago Medical Book Company, as required up to the following totals: College of Medicine, $8,000; College of Dentistry, $2,000; total, $10,000. The lists of prescribed texts and manuals were submitted by the Dean of each College. Price and discount policies cited for item 5 apply to this purchase also. I recommend approval. PURCHASES AUTHORIZED (35) A report of the following purchases proposed by the Purchasing Agent and authorized by the Comptroller as emergency actions: 1. Canned fruits and vegetables to feed A.S.T.P. and S.T.A.R. personnel, for the Illini Union Food Service, from the Quartermaster Sales Commissary, Chanute Field, at a total cost of $3,925.20. 2. One rebuilt Chandler and Price press equipped with new Kluge automatic feeder, for the University Print Shop, from Brandtjen & Kluge, Inc., the lowest bidder, at their price of $1,344.01. 3. Shelled corn, 2,389.1 bushels No. 2 yellow, for the Animal Husbandry Feed Storage, from H . H. Marshall and Esther Maxwell, each for 1,194.55 bushels, at a total cost of $1,194.55. 4. Paper towels, 900 cases A.P.W. Victor, for the Physical Plant Department stock, from W. B. Read & Company, the lowest bidder, at their price of $2,538. 5. Boxing gloves, 72 sets (16 oz., laceless, with elastic cuff), requested by Department of Physical Education for Men for use in physical training program for A.S.T.P. from Bailey and Himes at a total cost of $1,159.20. 6. Dl-threonine, 1,000 grams, requested by the Chemistry Department, for the work of Professor Rose in amino acids for the Rockefeller Foundation, from Merck & Company, at their price of $1,020, f.o.b. Rahway, New Jersey. 7. Mimeographed bond paper, 2,500 reams 8J4 x 11—20 lb. No. 1 sulphite (500 reams each of pink, blue, green, buff, and canary) for Extension Service in Agriculture and Home Economics, from Dwight Bros. Paper Company, the lowest bidder, at their price of $1,468.75.
