O n m o t i o n of M r . F o r n o f , this r e c o m m e n d a t i o n w a s a d o p t e d . APPOINTMENT OF ACTING MANAGER OF ILLINI U N I O N (8) Mr. Vernon L. Kretschmer, Manager of the Mini Union Building, has received a commission in t h e United States Naval Reserve and will report for active service on July 5, 1943. There is a separate recommendation that he be given a leave of absence without pay. On recommendation of the Director of the Physical Plant Department, I have approved the appointment of Mr. Erwin J. Schreiber, Manager of the Mini Union Bookstore, as Acting Manager of the Mini Union Building (in addition to his duties as Manager of the Mini Union Bookstore) under the following terms and conditions: 1. T h e increased responsibilities will be assigned him t o r a period of six months, after which the University or Mr. Schreiber may decide to terminate the agreement. 2. This increase in responsibilities shall in no way be considered permanent and will in no way affect Mr. Schreiber's status or future as Manager of the Mini Union Bookstore. 3. Since it is impossible to make definite allocation of the time required in the management of the Mini Union Building and the Mini Union Bookstore, Mr. Schreiber's responsibility will be to develop an organization to operate both enterprises successfully. 4. This appointment will become effective July 1, 1943, and will continue throughout the absence of Mr. Kretschmer unless terminated as provided above. T h e salary will be at the rate of $4,500 a year for the two positions, plus such meals as it may be necessary for him to have in connection with the discharge of his duties as Acting Manager of the Mini Union Building. This arrangement is similar to that with the present Manager.

On motion of Mrs. Grigsby, the action of the President of the University in making this appointment was approved and confirmed.

LEAVES OF ABSENCE (9) A recommendation that the following leaves of absence be granted members of the staff for the reasons and periods and under the conditions indicated in each case, which a r e in accordance with the regulations of the Board governing such leaves: JAMES G. V A N DEKPOOL, Professor of the History of A r t and H e a d of the Department of Art, sick leave with pay from April 2 to May 10, 1943. DAVID H . HOOVER, Associate in Economics, sick leave from February 1 through June 30, 1943, with pay, less the additional expense involved in changing the status of Mr. Frank G. Coolsen, Assistant in Economics, who will carry on Doctor Hoover's work, from one-half to three-fourths time. EDITH RAMSEY, Clinic. Nurse in the Dispensary of the Research and Educational Hospitals, extension of sick leave, without pay, from April 13 through August 31, 1943.
