BOARD OF TRUSTEES MINUTES APPROVED

The Secretary presented the minutes of the meetings of the Board of Trustees on November 19 and December 17, 1958, and January 20, 1959, press proof copies of which have previously been sent to the Board. On motion of Mr. Johnston, these minutes were approved as printed on pages 179 to 283, inclusive. BUSINESS PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY The Board took up consideration of the following reports and recommendations from the President of the University.

APPOINTMENTS TO T H E FACULTY (1) The following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. 1. FRED FISCHER, Research Assistant Professor of Physics, beginning September IT 1959. at an annual salary of $7,500 ( D Y ) . 2. EDWARD L E E GARWIN, Research Assistant Professor of Physics, beginning September 1, 19S9, at an annual salary of $7,500 ( D Y ) . 3. ROBERT W . JOHANNSEN, Associate Professor of History, beginning September 1, 1959, at an annual salary of $8,000 ( D ) . 4. JERMYN F. MCCAHAN, Clinical Assistant Professor of Preventive Medicine, beginning April I, 1959, without salary ( D Y ) . 5. ERNST T. MORCH, Clinical Professor of Anesthesiology, in the Department of Surgery, on one-fourth time, beginning March 1, 1959, at an annual salary of $3,000 ( D Y 2 5 ) . 6. FRANCO U. RINALDI, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, in the College of Medicine, beginning February 1, 1959, without salary ( D Y ) . 7. DONALD ROSS, Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, in the College of Medicine, beginning March 1, 1959, without salary ( D Y ) . 8. JOHN R. SCHRIEFFER, Assistant Professor of Physics, beginning September 1, 1959, at an annual salary of $7,200 ( D ) . 9. ROBERT B. SCHWART, Associate Professor of Farm Management, in the Department of Agricultural Economics, beginning May 1, 1959, at an annual salary of $8,800 (S-DY29, E-DY71). Nonacademic Appointment The Director of Nonacademic Personnel reports the following appointment to a supervisory position of upper level responsibility. 1. BARBARA F. ADAMS, Staff Physical Therapist in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, in the Research and Educational Hospitals, beginning February 23, 1959, at an annual salary of $4,920.

On motion of Mr. Pogue, these appointments were confirmed.

HEADSHIP O F T H E DEPARTMENT OF DERMATOLOGY (2) The Dean of the College of Medicine and the Vice-President in charge of the Chicago Professional Colleges recommend the appointment of Dr. Adolph Rostenberg, Jr., as Professor of Dermatology on indefinite tenure and Head of the Department of Dermatology beginning May 1, 1959, at a salary of $18,000 a year on "Y" basis. This appointment is to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Dr. Marcus R. Caro, who has gone into private practice, but who accepted appointment on the nonsalaried staff as Research Associate in Oral Pathology in the College of Dentistry. Dr. Rostenberg has been Acting Head of the Department since September 1, 1958. H e was nominated for this appointment by a special search committee and all members of the Department of Dermatology of professorial rank have been consulted. T h e Vice-President and Provost and the Dean of the Graduate College concur. I recommend approval.

On motion of Mrs. Watkins, this appointment was approved.
