Resolutions of the Executive Committee of the University of Illinois Citizens Committee T h e Executive Committee of the University of Illinois Citizens Committee has adopted the following resolutions: In view of the defeat of the State Building Bond Issue referendum, the Executive Committee of the University of Illinois Citizens Committee strongly urges that other appropriate measures for financing the great needs of the University of Illinois be initiated at as early a date as possible. T h e Executive Committee of the University of Illinois Citizens Committee wishes to stress the importance of adequate faculty compensation as the key to quality in higher education and urges the Governor and the General Assembly of the state of Illinois to keep this point uppermost in deliberations and considerations relative to the University of Illinois, to the benefit of the University and to the State.

On motion of Mr. Johnston, these appointments were approved. On motion of Mr. Herrick, the Secretary was requested to send a note of thanks to the Executive Committee for these resolutions.

CENTER FOR A D V A N C E D STUDY

(6) T h e University Research Board and the Executive Committee of the Graduate College recommend the establishment of a Center for Advanced Study as a special unit of the Graduate College under Section 18 of the University of Illinois Statutes and according to the plan described below. This has been reviewed by the University Council which supports the recommendation. While University Senate approval is not required under University Statutes, the proposal was nevertheless submitted to the Urbana-Champaign Senate which has recommended approval. It has also been cleared with the Senate Coordinating Council. I recommend approval. O n m o t i o n of M r . H e r r i c k , t h i s r e c o m m e n d a t i o n w a s a p p r o v e d . The primary purpose of the Center for Advanced Study shall be the encouragement of creative achievement and scholarship by providing recognition to scholars of the highest distinction and by providing incentives for the highest level of scholarly achievement. In its original organization the Center for Advanced Study shall be composed of members and associate members. T h e members shall constitute the Executive Committee of the Center, and the Dean of the Graduate College shall be its executive officer and a member ex officio. T h e Executive Committee shall be free to propose other types of affiliation with the Center, in addition to the associate members, at such times as it may desire. Members. Members of the Center for Advanced Study shall be appointed by the Board of Trustees on the recommendation of the President. Members ordinarily will be appointed for renewable five-year terms.
