H E A D S H I P O F D E P A R T M E N T O F ANTHROPOLOGY (2) The Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences recommends the appointment of Dr. Joseph B. Casagrande, presently on the staff of the Social Science Research Council, New York City, as Professor of Anthropology on indefinite tenure and Head of the Department of Anthropology, beginning September 1, i960, at an annual salary of $15,000 on "A" basis. It is also recommended that he be given a summer appointment beginning July I, i960, through August 31, i960, at a total salary of $3,332 for the period, so that his services will be available in organizing the program of the new Department of Anthropology. This recommendation is made after consultation with the appropriate members of the faculty and is endorsed by the Vice-President and Provost and the Dean of the Graduate College. The Department of Anthropology, formerly a part of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, was established by the Board of Trustees on July 21, 1959. Dr. Julian H . Steward, Research Professor of Anthropology and a member of the Center for Advanced Study, has been serving as Acting Head of the Department during the current academic year. I concur in this recommendation.

On motion of Mr. Clement, this appointment was approved.
