Head Football Coach at the University of California at Berkeley, as Head Football Coach at the University of Illinois effective January I, i960, at a salary of $18,000 a year. The Dean of the College of Physical Education will also recommend his appointment as Associate Professor of Physical Education for Men effective September I, i960, and part of his salary thereafter will be paid from University funds for teaching services. In the meantime, Mr. Ray Eliot, who became Assistant Director of Athletics on January 1, i960, and who is also Associate Professor of Physical Education for Men, will in that capacity complete his teaching assignment for the academic year 1959-60. After consultation with all members of the Board of Trustees and securing their approval, the appointment was announced on December 22, 1959, and is now submitted with the President's recommendation for formal approval.

On motion of Mr. Herrick, seconded by Mr. Pogue, this appointment was approved.

APPOINTMENTS TO THE FACULTY (4) The following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. 1. PAUL J. DOEBEL, Director of Housing, beginning January 1, i960, at an annual salary of $11,000 ( D Y ) . 2. FOLKE DOVRING, Professor of Agricultural Economics, beginning February I, i960, at an annual salary of $13,000 ( A Y ) . 3. ROBERT W. EVANS, Administrative Assistant in the President's Office, for one year from January I, i960, at an annual salary of $9,000 ( F Y ) . 4. EARL F. FINDER, Director of the Illini Union, beginning January 1, i960, at an annual salary of $10,700 ( D Y ) . 5. WILLIAM W . H A Y , Assistant Professor of Geology, beginning September 1, i960, at an annual salary of $6,000 ( D ) . 6. VERNON L. KRETSCHMER, Director of Auxiliary Services, beginning January I, i960, at an annual salary of $15,500 ( D Y ) . 7. VINCENT MASSEY, Visiting Associate Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, for four and one-half months from March 16, i960, at a salary of $5,000 ( G ) . 8. HERMANN MATTENHEIMER, Assistant Professor of Biological Chemistry, in the College of Medicine, beginning December 1, 1959, without salary ( D Y ) . 9. LLOYD E. MCCLEARY, Associate Professor of Education, beginning February 1, i960, at an annual salary of $9,000 ( B ) . 10. ARTHUR R. ROBINSON, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, beginning September 1, i960, at an annual salary of $9,000 ( B ) . 11. DONALD F . SCHULTZ, Research Assistant Professor of Biophysics, in the Department of Electrical Engineering, on one-half time, beginning July 1, i960, at an annual salary of $7,000 ( S ) (BY50). 12. LIDA JANE WILLE, Consultant in the School of Social Work, with rank of Associate Professor, beginning February 1, i960, at an annual salary of $10,000 ( B Y ) .

On motion of Mr. Swain, these appointments were confirmed.

APPOINTMENT TO T H E INSTITUTE OF LABOR AND INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS ADVISORY COMMITTEE (5) The Director of the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations recommends the appointment of Mr. John Meade, Vice-President and Director of Industrial Relations of Fansteel Metallurgical Corporation, North Chicago, Illinois, as a management representative on the Institute's Advisory Committee for a term of three years beginning September I, 1959, to fill a vacancy on that Committee. Mr. Meade has had extensive government and industry experience in the field of industrial relations. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Johnston, this appointment was approved.
