MEETINGS O F BOARD COMMITTEES

[December 16

Meetings of the Committees o n General Policy, Buildings a n d Grounds, and Nonacademic Personnel were held in the forenoon, prior to the Board meeting. Following these committee meetings, members of the Board a n d other University officials were guests of the officers of the First National Bank of Chicago at luncheon. W h e n the Board convened, on motion of M r . Herrick, the Secretary was instructed to write to the officers of the Bank expressing appreciation of the Trustees for this hospitality. BUSINESS PRESENTED BY T H E PRESIDENT OF T H E UNIVERSITY T h e Board took up consideration of the following reports a n d recommendations from the President of the University.

A W A R D OF CERTIFIED P U B L I C A C C O U N T A N T CERTIFICATES

(1) The Committee on Accountancy recommends that the certificate of Certified Public Accountant be awarded, under Section 5 of the Accountancy Act of 1043, as amended, to the following candidates who have presented evidence that they are holders of valid and unrevoked Certified Public Accountant certificates obtained by passing a standard written examination in another state or territory of the United States and who qualify in all other respects under this provision of the law: State from Which They Name Address Obtained Certificates PHILLIP BERNSTEIN Chicago District of Columbia

(2) The following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of Assistant Professor and above, and involving tenure, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. 1. PIETRO U. CAPURRO, Assistant Professor of Pathology, beginning December I, 1959, at an annual salary of $12,000 (DY). 2. PALLIAKARANAI T. NARASIMHAN, Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, beginning November 9, 1959, at an annual salary of $6,000 ( D ) . 3. HERBERT E. NATOF, Clinical Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, in the Department of Surgery, beginning November 1, 1959, without salary (DY). 4. JACQUES OVADIA, Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiology, beginning November 1, 1959, without salary (DY). 5. H. J. ZWART, Visiting Associate Professor of Geology, for the academic year 1960-61, at a salary of $8,000 (G). O n motion of M r . H u g h e s , these appointments were confirmed.

(3) Governor William G. Stratton has appointed William H. Rice, Administrative Assistant (Legislative Relations) in the President's Office, as Administrative Assistant on the Governor's staff for an indefinite period. The Governor had previously requested the University to release Mr. Rice for this service. He has accepted the assignment and requests a leave of absence from the University. I agreed to release Mr. Rice and recommend that he be given leave without pay. Although his appointment on the Governor's staff is not for a definite
