EQUIPMENT FOR THE ILLINI U N I O N BUILDING (38) T h e Director of the Physical Plant Department submits estimates of the cost of furnishings and equipment needed in the Illini Union Building and of funds available to purchase them. Detailed analyses of these estimates are presented and a copy is hereby given to the Secretary of the Board for record. The estimates arc summarized as follows: I. Transfer of charges to other appropriations: ( a ) Change portion of interior painting to building construction account releasing funds for equipment 13000 (b) Apply University funds appropriated for Gregory Hall furniture (which can now be purchased from Gregory Hall construction funds) to purchase of admiuistrative and student office furniture in the Illini Union Building 2 700 3. Balance to be raised by the University of Illinois Foundation or secured from other sources 62 250 T h e Director of the Physical Plant Department requests and the President of the University recommends the following: 1. Appropriation for architectural services on Illini Union Building not approved by the Federal W o r k s Agency. (This represents expenses incurred by the University prior to the approval of the grant for this project, the payment of which from Federal funds will not be approved by the Federal W o r k s Agency) $3 858 2. Approval of transfer of appropriation of $2,700 previously made by the board for the purchase of Gregory Hall furniture, to the purchase of student and administrative office furniture in Illini Union Building $2 700

On motion of Mr. Cleary, the appropriation involved in Item i was made, and the transfer of funds from Gregory Hall was approved, by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Cleary, Mr. Karraker, Mr. Mayer, Dr. Meyer, Mr. Moschel, Mr. Pogue; no, none; absent, Mr. Adams, Mr. Horner, Mr. Jensen, Mrs. Plumb, Mr. Wieland.

U N I O N B U I L D I N G IN CHICAGO DEPARTMENTS (39) T h e Director of the Physical Plant Department recommends that the Board approve in principle: 1. That the student fee or service charge for the use of the proposed student-faculty-alumni center or union building in the Chicago Departments be equal to that charged for the Illini Union Building at Urbana, or $5 a semester. 2. T h a t the University assume a part of the cost of operating the union building in the Chicago Departments to the extent of $8,300 a year beginning July 1, 1941. This represents the cost of facilities and services which the University has an obligation to furnish to its students.

The Board gave favorable consideration to these recommendations in principle but action was deferred pending a specific report from the Physical Plant Department on the analysis of the costs of operating the Union Building services in Chicago.
