ASSIGNMENT OF PATENT O N PHOTOELECTRIC CELL (28) T h e Secretary of the Board reports that he has received United States Patent No. 2,185,513, issued J a n u a r y 2, 1040, to Joseph Tykocinski Tykociner, Jakob Kunz, and Lloyd Preston Garner, assignors to the Board of Trustees of the University, for a photoelectric cell, issued on application Serial No. 183,460.

This report was received for record.

PURCHASES RECOMMENDED (29) A recommendation that the following purchases be authorized: 1. Recording microphotometer for the Department of Chemistry, from Leeds and N o r t h r u p Company, Chicago, at a price of $3,187.50 f.o.b. Urbana. This is a non-competitive item as it can be obtained only from this company. 2. Structural steel for building testing machine for fatigue tests of riveted joints, Department of Civil Engineering, from the American Bridge Company, Chicago, the lowest bidder, at a cost of $2,280.

On motion of Mrs. Plumb, these purchases were authorized as recommended.

REPORT OF DEATH BENEFITS PAID (30) A report that the Comptroller has been authorized to pay the death benefits to the beneficiaries of the following members of the staff, in accordance with the University Statutes and the terms of their employment: 1. Charles Zeleny, Research Professor of Zoology—$1,500. Professor Zeleny was in the active service of the University from September 1, 1909, until the date of his death on December 21, 1939. 2. F r a n k O. Elder, laborer in the Physical Plant Department—$581.67. Mr. Elder was in the active service of the University from May 25, 1933, to February 20, 1939, since which time he has been on leave of absence without pay. His death occurred on January 9, 1940. T h i s report w a s received for record. QUARTERLY REPORT OF THE COMPTROLLER (31) T h e quarterly report of the Comptroller to the Board of Trustees as at December 31, 1939. A copy of this has been sent to each member of the Board. T h i s report w a s received for record. BEQUEST OF MARY C. McLELLAN (32) On J u n e 22, 1938 (Minutes, page 856), and on July 15, 1938 (Minutes, page 24), reports were made to the Board of certain items received under bequests to the University by the late Mary C. McLellan, an alumna of the class of 1888. T h e principal bequest, which has not been reported previously, is as follows (extract from will of Mary C. McLellan, dated January 24, 1930): "Twenty-Second: W h e n my estate shall have been converted into cash, I hereby will and bequeath to the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois at Urbana, Illinois, all of the funds remaining in the hands of my Executor after payment of the specific bequests and other sums hereinbefore specified and after payment of all costs and expenses of administration of my estate and execution of this will, including any lapsed, void or adeemed legacies, which said sum shall be devoted to the purchase of objects of art for the Art Department of the University of Illinois a n d / o r the establishment of a traveling scholarship in said Art Department to be known as the Mary C. McLellan scholarship." T h e Comptroller reports that he has received $10,000 from the executors of the estate as a preliminary payment under this bequest. A further distribution is expected in the near future, and it is estimated that the total amount which the University will receive will approximate $15,000.
