(b) A reduction of the regular work week schedule of janitors and other similar employees to 44 hours or five and one-half days per week at approximately the same weekly earnings as at present. This would mean an hourly rate of about 6o£ an hour for janitors in place of the present 56^ and similar adjustments for other employees. 2. That, if it is necessary to make any answer to the janitors concerning their request, they be advised that the University will endeavor to meet prevailing local wage and employment conditions as rapidly as practicable. The estimate of the amount required per year to make these adjustments is as follows: For extra pay for overtime and holidays $7 For reduction of work week to 44 hours 25 For adjustment in departments other than Physical Plant 10 Total $42 067 267 000 334

APPOINTMENTS MADE BY THE PRESIDENT

T h e Secretary presented for record a list of appointments made by the President of the University. Bagaason, Obie Kenneth, Attendant in the Animal Hospital, in the College of Medicine, for one year beginning September I, 1938, subject to the rules of the Civil Service Commission, at a cash compensation of one thousand three hundred twenty dollars ($r,32o). (September 27, 1938)1 Barnes, Martha Revel, Assistant in Zoology, on one-half time, for ten months beginning September 1, 1938, at a cash compensation of six hundred dollars ($600) (this supersedes her previous appointment). (September 27, 1938) Becker, Gertrude Catherine, University Junior Typist in the Provost's Office, beginning September 27, 1938, and continuing through August 31, 1939, subject to the rules of the Civil Service Commission, at a cash compensation at the rate of one hundred dollars ($100) a month (this supersedes her previous appointment). (September 30, 1938) Bedinger, Paul, Assistant in Medicine, in the College of Medicine, for eleven months beginning October 1, 1938, without salary. (October 4, 1938) Berbaum, Stanley Ernest, Mechanic in the Military Department, beginning October r, 1938, and continuing through August 31, 1939, subject to the rules of the Civil Service Commission, at a cash compensation at the rate of one hundred twenty-five dollars ($125) a month. (October 7, 1938) Besancon, Robert Martin, Instructor in Physics, in the Department of Chemistry, in the College of Pharmacy, for nine months beginning October I, 1938, at a cash compensation of one thousand five hundred dollars ($1,500). (October 6, 1938) Browdy, Alvin, Assistant in Chemistry, on one-fourth time, for five months beginning September I, 1938, at a cash compensation at the rate of thirty dollars ($30) a month. (October 4, 1938)
