BOARD OF T R U S T E E S

[January 14

CALL TO EXECUTIVE SESSION President Stone, referring to Section T w o of the Open Meetings Act, stated: "A motion is now in order to hold an executive session to consider information regarding the appointment, employment, or dismissal of employees or officers, and to discuss pending, probable, or imminent litigation against or on behalf of the University." T h e motion was made by Mr. Howard and approved by the following vote: Aye, Mrs. Day, Dr. Donoghue, Mr. Forsyth, Mr. Hahn, Mr. Howard, Mr. Madden, Mr. Neal, Mrs. Shepherd, Mr. Stone; no, none; absent, Governor Thompson. ( T h e student advisory vote was: Aye, Mr. Bandala, Mr. Bettenhausen, Mr. Persons; no, none.) Complaint of Hiring Decision, Medical Center T h e trustees had received letters complaining of an alleged discriminatory action with regard to a hiring decision at the Medical Center campus concerning an employee, one Show-Jen Horng. T h e president asked the university counsel, Mr. Costello, to provide background information. Mr. Costello reported that the complaint is now before the H u m a n Rights Commission, and he distributed a letter summarizing die case from Norm a n P. Jeddeloh, legal counsel at die Medical Center. Chancellor Begando will take die initiative to respond to die letters. Case of Robert N. Parker (Recovery of Funds) T h e university counsel reported on continuing discussions with the surety companies involved in this case, outlining alternatives now under consideration tiiat might promote die University's recovery of die funds witiiout litigation. H e reported no resolution of these discussions at diis time. Possible Misuse of Funds, Office of Public Affairs, Medical Center Vice President Brady reported on an investigation currently underway by die internal auditors, still incomplete but sufficiently informative to report to die Board of Trustees. T h e investigation, which will be completed widiin about a mondi, indicates that two employees may have submitted inappropriate travel expense claims and received payment for the same; and may have submitted inappropriate charges for die employment of consultants. I n botii instances diere may have been a misuse of bodi appropriated funds and University funds. T h e total sum involved may be somediing less dian $100,000. Upon completion of die investigation, die matter will be reported to die external auditors. Reports of Searches for Administrative Positions T h e president reported tiiat die committee to advise in die search for die new chancellor of die University of Illinois at Chicago was essentially
