T h e rate increases proposed for each of the housing units at Urbana-Champaign include amounts sufficient to provide maximum contributions to the Repair and Replacement Reserve established through the Auxiliary Facilities System. The rates currently in effect at the Urbana-Champaign campus compare favorably with those charged by the Big Ten universities. Given available information on increases projected at other Big Ten campuses next year, Urbana-Champaign rates should continue to approximate the midpoint of this range. President's Report on Actions of the Senates (15) T h e president reported on the following actions of the senates. Change in Name, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, The Abraham Lincoln School of Medicine, College of Medicine, Medical Center T h e Medical Center Senate has approved a recommendation from the College of Medicine to change the name of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery to the Department of Orthopaedics. 1 The proposed name better defines the functions of the department and follows a trend that is occurring nationally among such departments. Change of Designation o f Doctoral Program in Social W o r k , Chicago Circle and Urbana-Champaign T h e senates at the Chicago Circle and Urbana-Champaign campuses have approved the redesignation of the Doctor of Social Work Degree as the Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Social Work 1 effective spring quarter 1981, Chicago Circle, and spring semester 1981, Urbana-Champaign. No other changes in the program are Contemplated. Within the last five years several schools have developed new clinical doctoral degrees in social work. These clinical degrees are practice rather than research focused and are uniformly designated as Doctor of Social Work. Several universities which formerly offered the Doctor of Social Work for a research-oriented course of study have changed the designation of their degree to the Doctor of Philosophy. The basis for the doctoral program in social work at the University of Illinois is a commitment to traditional research, research methodology, and other scholarly activity. The Schools of Social Work at Chicago Circle and Urbana-Champaign wish to change the designation of their doctoral degrees to reflect more clearly their research orientation. Revision of the Master of Arts in the Teaching of Spanish Degree, Urbana T h e Urbana-Champaign Senate has approved a recommendation from the
