T h e appointment of Ronald P. Legon, presently associate dean of the Graduate College, as acting vice chancellor for research and dean of the Graduate College, on a twelve-month service basis, at a salary to be established during the normal campus salary-setting process. T h e approval of a one-year administrative leave of absence for Richard M. Johnson, currently vice chancellor for academic affairs. T h e first half of this leave will extend from July 1, 1986, through December 3 1 , 1986, and the second half will be taken during the 1987-88 or 1988-89 academic year at a time to be determined. Dr. Johnson intends to resume his research and to teach in political science. T h e vice president for academic affairs concurs. I recommend approval. O n m o t i o n of M r . M a d d e n , t h e s e r e c o m m e n d a t i o n s w e r e a p p r o v e d .

Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Urbana

(7) T h e chancellor at Urbana-Champaign has recommended the appointment of Robert M. Berdahl, presently professor of history and dean of arts and sciences of the University of Oregon, as professor of history on indefinite tenure and vice chancellor for academic affairs, beginning August 2 1 , 1986, on a twelve-month service basis at an annual salary of $95,000. Dr. Berdahl will succeed Dr. Edwin L. Goldwasser who asked to be relieved of this administrative assignment. The nomination is made on the recommendation of a search committee. 1 T h e vice president for academic affairs concurs. I recommend approval.

(8) T h e chancellor at the Urbana-Champaign campus has recommended the appointment of John D. Hogan, presently senior vice president and assistant to the chairman, American General Corporation, Houston, Texas, as professor of finance on indefinite tenure and dean of the College of Commerce and Business Administration, beginning June 2 1 , 1986, on a twelve-month service basis at an annual salary of $108,000 with an administrative stipend of $12,000. Dr. Hogan will succeed Dr. John F. D u e who has been serving as acting dean since August 21, 1985. T h e nomination is made with the recommendation of a search committee 1 and
