BOARD OF T R U S T E E S

[November 14

EXECUTIVE SESSION President Shepherd, referring to Section T w o of die Open Meetings Act, stated: "A motion is now in order to hold an executive session to consider information regarding the appointment, employment, or dismissal of employees or officers; to discuss pending, probable, or imminent litigation; the acquisition of real property; and to discuss campus security." T h e motion was made by Mr. Forsyth and approved unanimously. T h e board received a brief report from the university counsel, Mr. Higgins, concerning die extent and nature of liability claims, especially in medical malpractice. There was general discussion of this problem, involving as it may large settlements and cosdy insurance coverage. Vice President Bazzani presented a brief report on the search for a new officer, associate vice president for administration and personnel. T h e search is in a final stage, and it may be possible to make an offer to an individual prior to the January meeting of the Board of Trustees. EXECUTIVE SESSION ADJOURNED FOR COMMITTEE MEETINGS Following a meeting of the Buildings and Grounds Committee and the Finance and Audit Committee, the board reconvened in regular session at 11:00 a.m. 1 MINUTES APPROVED T h e secretary presented for approval the press proof of the minutes of the Board of Trustees meeting of July 18, 1985, copies of which had previously been sent to die board. O n motion of Mr. Forsyth, these minutes were approved. BUSINESS PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNIVERSITY President Ikenberry recognized and introduced observers from the campus senates and from the University Senates Conference. 2 T h e president also recognized Mark Menich, president of the Student Council at Rockford, who welcomed the trustees to Rockford; and Director Bernard P. Salafsky, who reviewed some of the future plans of the program at Rockford, in particular the broadening of its relationships with hospitals and other agencies, and the potential for cooperative research widi the Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine at Urbana. OLD AND NEW BUSINESS Report on Student Use of Alcohol M r . H a h n , referring to difficulties encountered during the annual Hallo1 On Wednesday, November 13, 1985, the trustees met with Dr. Bernard P. Salafsky, director of the College of Medicine at Rockford, and ten of his associates to receive detailed presentations on the work of the college. Perspectives from students, faculty, graduates, research and clinical staff, and others were presented. (On the following day, manv of those present from the staff and members of the Executive Committee of the College of Medicine at Rockford joined the board for luncheon.) 3 University Senates Conference: Dorothy Grover, associate professor of philosophy, Chicago campus; Urbana-Champaign Senate Council: James Simon, associate professor of architecture; Chicago campus JSenate: Stanley K. Shapiro, professor and head of the Department of Biological Sciences, University Center.
