T h e merger has the support of the faculties of family medicine and community medicine, the Executive Committee at Rockford, the Executive Committee of the College of Medicine, the director of the College of Medicine at Rockford, and the dean of the College of Medicine. T h e merger also has the support of the Ad Hoc Committee to Study the Future Directions for Community and Family Medicine. T h e chancellor at Chicago and the vice president for academic affairs have recommended approval. T h e University Senates Conference has indicated no further senate jurisdiction is involved. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Forsyth, this recommendation was approved.

Consolidation, Departments of O r a l Diagnosis, Oral Pathology, a n d Radiology, College of Dentistry, Chicago (18) T h e senate at the Chicago campus has approved a proposal by the College of Dentistry to consolidate the Departments of Oral Diagnosis, Oral Pathology, and Radiology to form a new unit, the Department of Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences. The consolidation will provide an integrated approach to teaching and research in clinical and microscopic oral problems. T h e merging of these diagnostic departments in a joint effort centered on the patient will result in the expansion of the scientific and methodological bases for research activity and will encourage faculty development. Moreover, the consolidation will mean better preparation of students and, therefore, better treatment for patients. T h e proposal has been endorsed by the faculty of the College of Dentistry. T h e chancellor at Chicago and the vice president for academic affairs have recommended approval. T h e University Senates Conference has indicated no further senate jurisdiction is involved. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Forsyth, this recommendation was approved.

Abolition of the Department of Preventive Medicine a n d Community H e a l t h , College of Medicine, Chicago (19) T h e senate at the Chicago campus has approved a proposal by the College of Medicine to abolish the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health and to transfer its personnel, budget, space, and program responsibilities to the Department of Internal Medicine. T h e objective is to strengthen and further develop preventive medicine by locating it in the Department of Internal Medicine; and by allowing it to collaborate more effectively with the School of Public Health and other departments in the College of Medicine. T h e faculties of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health and the Department of Internal Medicine, and the College of Medicine Advisory Committee and Executive Committee have unanimously endorsed this proposal. T h e chancellor at Chicago and the vice president for academic affairs have recommended approval. T h e University Senates Conference has indicated that no further senate jurisdiction is involved. I concur.
