BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Head, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Urbana

(7) The chancellor at Urbana-Champaign, after consultation with the dean of the College of Engineering, has recommended the appointment of Alva L. Addy, presently professor of mechanical and industrial engineering,1 as head of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering beginning February 12, 1987, on an academic year service basis at an annual salary of $73,000. Dr. Addy will continue to hold the rank of professor on indefinite tenure. He will succeed Dr. Bei Tse Chao who asked to be relieved of this administrative assignment. The nomination is made on the recommendation of a search committee' and after consultation with members of the faculty of the department. The vice president for academic affairs concurs. I recommend approval. O n m o t i o n of M r . Forsyth, this a p p o i n t m e n t w a s approved.

Head, Department of Political Science, Urbana

(8) The chancellor at Urbana-Champaign, after consultation with the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has recommended the appointment of George T. Yu, presently professor of political science and East Asian and Pacific Studies, as head of the Department of Political Science beginning August 21, 1987, on an academic year service basis at an annual salary of $61,000. Dr. Yu will continue to hold the rank of professor on indefinite tenure. He will succeed Dr. Roger E. Kanet who asked to be relieved of this administrative assignment. The nomination is made with the advice of a search committee* and after consultation with faculty members of the department. The Executive Committee of the college endorses the recommendation. The vice president for academic affairs concurs. I recommend approval. O n m o t i o n of M r . Forsyth, this a p p o i n t m e n t w a s approved.

(9) The following new appointments to the faculty of the rank of assistant professor and above, and certain administrative positions, have been approved since the previous meeting of the Board of Trustees. Positions in the University are classified in the following categories and are designated in the budget by the symbols indicated. A — Indefinite tenure N — Term appointment not eligible to be appointed for an indefinite term and not credited toward probationary period Q — Initial term appointment for a professor or associate professor T — Terminal appointment accompanied with or preceded by notice of nonreappointment

Buckius, professor of mechanical engineering and associate head of the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering; Thomas F. Conry, professor of general engineering and mechanical engineering; Richard i E . DeVor, professor of industrial engineering; James E. Peters, associate professor of mechanical engineering; Darrell F. Sode, professor of mechanical engineering; Charles _ L. Tucker III, associate professor of mechanical and industrial engineering; Robert A. White, professor of mchanical engineering. ' Geoffrey J. D. He wings, professor of geography and urban and regional planning and head of the Department of Geography, chair; Ira H. Carmen, professor of political science; Robert F. Rich, professor of political science and director of the Institute of Government and Public Affairs; Robert Weinberg, professor of political science; Frederick M.
