Modification, Requirements for Admission, School of Public Health, Medical Center

(17) T h e faculty and the dean of the School of Public Health have recommended and the Senate at the Medical Center campus has approved a revised admission policy statement. (A copy of the statement is filed with the secretary of the board.) T h e revision incorporates all current admission requirements 1 for the Master of Public Health degree and in addition broadens the statement to cover the Master of Science, Doctor of Public Health, and Doctor of Philosophy.* T h e proposed revision would become effective for applicants seeking admission after July 1, 1979. T h e University Committee on Admissions has endorsed the proposal. T h e chancellor at the Medical Center and the vice president for academic affairs concur. T h e University Senates Conference has indicated that no further senate jurisdiction is involved. I recommend approval.

Revised Process for Screening Applicants for Admission to the College of Medicine, Medical Center (Report for Information)

(18) On June 2 1 , 1978, the Board of Trustees approved a revised admission statement for the College of Medicine. T h e statement reads, in p a r t : T h e College endeavors to fulfill its responsibilities and the changing needs of society by selecting applicants who, in the judgment of the Committee on Admissions demonstrate academic achievement, skill in communication, emotional stability, maturity, integrity, and motivation adjudged necessary for the successful study and practice of medicine (and) who will meet best the needs of the citizenry of this State. T h e statement also expressed a policy to admit students across all socioeconomic groups and referred to college programs which would identify, admit, and graduate persons from nonurban areas and minority backgrounds. T h e College of Medicine now has proposed refinements in the admissions procedures and the weighting of academic, diversity, and other considerations in order more precisely to identify and apply the various factors which will affect admission decisions. The Committee on Admissions, the Academic Council of the College of Medicine, the executive dean, and the vice chancellor for academic affairs have endorsed the revised process for screening applicants for admission to the College of Medicine. 3 T h e chancellor and the vice president for academic affairs have indicated their concurrence. T h e proposed procedures contemplate that all applicants will be required tc» meet certain cognitive standards related to academic achievement. T o assure heterogeneity of the applicant pool, elements of diversity based upon minority status, disadvantaged status, special academic and nonacademic achievement, commitment to underserved areas, and participation in the Medical Scholars Program will be taken into account. Thereafter, interviews will be conducted with each of approximately 900 candidates in the group scoring highest on the combined cognitive and diversity indices. Based on these interviews, additional factors u n related to academic achievement will be considered in constructing a final rank order list for admission.
